First Crop Sire Red Storm Cat Gets First Appaloosa Stakes Winner

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—JUNE 1, 2013—First crop Quarter Horse stallion Red Storm Cat sired his first Appaloosa stakes winner Saturday night when Major Tom won the world’s richest Paint and Appaloosa Futurity—the Grade 1, $249,175 Speedhorse/Graham Farms Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Remington Park.

Major Tom had been a winning favorite in his two previous starts this season, but he was an upset winner at 6-1 when he broke well and ran straight to win the final by 1-3/4 lengths. Major Tom, a 2-year-old gelded son of Red Storm Cat from the Mr Eye Opener mare Eyesa Knockout was bred in Oklahoma by Gary Vaughn. Trained by Eddie Willis and ridden by Jimmy Brooks, the precocious sprinter earned $94,690 and gave owner Mary Hainline of Noble, Oklahoma her second Speedhorse/Graham Farms win.

From a limited number of starters in his first crop to race the son of leading living sire Mr Jess Perry has sired earners of more than $120,000. His get include the aforementioned Major Tom (3 wins at 2, $109,919), Wrs Quick Cat (2 wins at 2, $12,441), etc. Red Storm Cat is among the "Top Ten" leading first crop Quarter Horse sire's of money earners.

Owned by the partnership of Julie Pilgrim, Linda Hickman, Robert and Karen Nunnally, the 7-year-old stallion won or placed in eight of 12 starts earning $226,439. He was second in the Texas Classic Futurity(G1), third in the Sunland Park Winter Derby(G2) and a finalist in the All American Juvenile Invitational.

Red Storm Cat's dam is the G1 placed Dash For Cash mare Tiny Dash Of Cash ($211,118), dam of three other stakes horses including full siblings Dash Of Perry ($382,390) and Pepper Perry ($113,287) and the stakes winner Sizzling ($147,912). Tiny Dash Of Cash is the granddam of Sunland Park Winter Futurity(G2) winner Templar Knight ($117,641).

The second dam is the stakes-placed and champion producing Special Effort mare Tinys Effort ($61,615), a half-sister to G1 winner and stakes sire Strawflyin Buds ($315,974) and stakes-placed Long Stemmed Roses ($36,726). Tinys Effort has produced 7 ROM including champion Tiny First Effort ($445,393), Grade 1 winner Tiny First Down ($317,881), stakes winner and G1 placed Crash Thru Traffic ($140,595).
