Q-RACING JOURNAL—APRIL 8, 2014—Considering that Dr. Ed Allred is American Quarter Horse racing’s No. 1 all-time breeder, more than $16 million ahead of No. 2 all-time breeder Vessels Stallion Farm LLC, it’s probably little surprise that four of the 10 fillies in the $223,800 La Primera Del Ano Derby (G3) on Saturday got their start at his Rolling A Ranch.

Three of them brought down the trifecta, with Fiesty Flo, Quirky and Sis Is Hot finishing 1-2-3. She Forgives, already a stakes winner and Grade 2-placed runner, was sixth. While only one of them – second-place finisher Quirky – carries the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member’s red-and-black-striped gold silks, all carry a great deal of breeding history in their veins.

Fiesty Flo, who races for Julio Encinas and Luis Sierra’s Freakier LLC, was an $8,500 purchase at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale, and from 10 starts has returned $110,981 to her owners.

Fiesty Flo is sired by Allred’s stallion TR Dasher. The 16-year-old son of First Down Dash is out of the Beduino (TB) mare Tylers Cutie. His full sister Tylers First Down won the 1996 QHBC Juvenile Classic (G3) and was second in the Ed Burke Memorial Futurity (G1) before producing 2001 All American Futurity (G1) winner Ausual Suspect. He himself was a stakes winner and was third in the 2001 El Primero Del Ano Derby (G2). He was also the star of a 2002 American Quarter Horse Racing Journal article, when he served as the demonstration horse for legendary “natural horsemanship” trainer Ray Hunt, who was teaching as part of an educational Starter’s Workshop at Sunland Park.

Moving to his second career as a sire and currently standing at Burns Ranch in Menifee, California, TR Dasher has to date sired nine crops to race, with more than $5.8 million in earnings. From limited crops each year – and only 264 starters total – he has 58 percent winners and 6 percent stakes winners. Coming from his second crop was none other than 2009 world champion Freaky ($929,722), and he is also the sire of Hard Hitting ($358,923). Another of his top runners is Grade 1 winner Remembering Spence – who just happens to be Fiesty Flo’s full brother.

Both Remembering Spence ($242,721) and Fiesty Flo are out Sables Bono. A mare by Bono Jazz, Sables Bono was bred by American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Spencer Childers and his wife, Florence. Childers was a close friend of Dr. Allred.

Allred purchased the 13-year-old mare as a yearling, and she was never raced. She had three foals before Allred tried the cross to TR Dasher. The first TR Dasher cross, My Pal Spence, died relatively young but the next two resulted in Remembering Spence and Fiesty Flo.

Sables Bono is a daughter of Childers’ homebreds Bono Jazz and Sables Secret. She is a half sister to Grade 1-placed runner Regal Colors (by A Regal Choice, $93,531) and stakes runner A Regal Secret (by A Regal Choice, $123,961). Sables Secret is a two-time Grade 1 winner who earned $155,081 in her career, and she is the daughter of champion and Grade 1 winner Black Sable.

This is the immediate family of champion Uncas ($398,504), Grade 1-placed runners Sables Defender ($172,318) and Painted Sable ($170,275), Restricted Grade 1-placed Miss Chicks Vision ($132,985) and stakes winner Karolina ($102,667).

Let’s consider the pedigrees of the other Allred-bred runners.

Quirky is by Stel Corona and out of the A Regal Choice mare Dont Pass Bar. She is the first foal out of Dont Pass Bar, who is a daughter of stakes runner Ynot Bar ($136,480). This mare is from the immediate family that includes Miss Kittys Bar Bet ($264,188), Dont Dink With Me ($164,153), Ambush Alley ($113,711), Doreme Fasolasi Win ($102,805), etc.

Sis Is Hot is by Walk Thru Fire and out of the Chicks Beduino mare Chickasis. She is a full sister to Hot Hitter ($508,127) and a half sister to Hard Hitting ($358,923) and Freaking ($120,769). She is also the dam of Chickasecret, the dam of Freaky.

She Forgives is by Foose and out of the Hawkinson mare Forgive Him, who won the 2008 edition of the La Primera (then a Grade 1). She Forgives, an earner of $135,187, is the mare’s first foal.
