Yoast

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–APRIL 10, 2014–He broke his maiden in his first start on April 10, 2008 at Remington Park, he was four. He made his 20th start on March 23, 2014 at Remington piloted to a one length victory by jockey G.R. Carter at the age of ten. Who is this modern day iron-horse? He is an Oklahoma-Bred by the name of Yoast.

Bred by Chris Sheehy, Yoast is a 2004 gelding by Shazoom and out of the Bully Bullion mare Doctor Prospector. Chris Sheehy and his trainer, Larry Abney, own him in a partnership. A horse who prefers to win, Yoast has lit the board in fifteen of his career attempts with a record of 6-6-1-2 in twenty starts from Ontario, to Iowa, to Indiana, with most of his starts right here at Remington Park.

Trainer, Larry Abney believes if you are good to your horse, they will be good to you. A conscious decision was made by the partnership of Sheehy & Abney to hold Yoast until he was four to allow the young gelding time to mature. The patience has paid off with a horse that has been a consistent winner and stayed sound over a span of six years.

Yoast has never had a surgery or any major soundness issues throughout his extended career. When asked what has kept the ten-year-old gelding running sound, Abney’s response is simple; “We don’t run him too often”. Abney also realizes genetics play a key role in the soundness of a racehorse.

“We have owned Doctor Prospector (the dam of Yoast) since she was a three year old. She raced until she was five, then we began breeding her”, said Abney.

A 1993 daughter of Bully Bullion, Doctor Prospector has produced 13 race age foals with 174 starts, and a total of 49 wins to combined earnings of $724,985. She is being bred to Tres Seis in 2014. The resulting foal will be a full sibling to Finche, Doctor Prospector’s leading money earner. Finche is a 2005 gelding whose largest win came in 2011 in the Grade 1 Sooner State Stakes at Remington. In 2011 he was named Champion Oklahoma-Bred Aged Quarter Horse Stallion/Gelding & Champion Quarter Horse Racing Stock.

Yoast along with his younger sibling, Finche both broke their maidens on the exact same day at Remington Park… April 10, 2008. Finche makes his first start in 2014 at Remington Park tonight in the 11th race, April 10th of course.

“These old guys have been so good to our family,” said Abney. We’ve turned down good money for each of them over the years, but it’s not always about the money. It’s about the love of the horse and the sport. In retirement, they will do something useful like trail riding, roping, or whatever suits them.”

Make plans to cheer on Yoast as well as Finche throughout the remainder of the 2014 Quarter Horse meet at Remington Park.
