Q-RACING JOURNAL—OCTOBER 27, 2014— It didn't come easily, but it came well earned.

On Sunday, Bobby Simmons’ Foxy Moonflash defeated a tough field to take the $207,482 New Mexico Classic Derby (RG2) by a half-length to earn her first stakes victory. Among the horses she defeated was champion Handsome Jack Flash ($1,509,958), recent All American Derby (G1) winner Too Flash For You ($954,550), stakes winner Kia Won ($167,155) and Grade 1 finalist DM One Hot Charmer ($114,596). Now the winner of four of nine career starts, Foxy Moonflash has earned $141,288.

The brown filly was bred by Norma and Dosi Alvarez, who bred her sire, First Moonflash. Foxy Moonflash is by First Moonflash and out of the Rabbits Rainbow mare Diamonds N Rainbows. Simmons picked her up at the 2012 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for $18,000.

Now in his second year as a sire, First Moonflash is lighting up the leading stallion charts much as he did the racing charts during his 25-race career.

The Alvarez’s consigned First Moonflash to the 2006 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, where he was purchased by Pierre and Leslie Amestoy, who had raced his sire, First To Flash. The Amestoys were eventually joined by partners Maria Gonzalez and Mike Abraham, and the horse would earn $969,828 in his career while racing only once outside of New Mexico. He won 10 stakes, set three world records and was the sport’s champion aged stallion in 2009.

First Moonflash is one of only 57 foals ever sired by champion First To Flash, who died at the age of 4 after only one year at stud. First Moonflash stands at Double LL Farms at Bosque, New Mexico, and started his sire career off with a homerun, in the form of aforementioned champion and All American Futurity (G1) winner Handsome Jack Flash and All American Derby winner Too Flash For You. From 117 starters, he has sired 51 winners and the earners of more than $4.7 million.

The New Mexico-bred day at Zia Park was apparently First Moonflash day – he was also the sire of $289,728 New Mexico Classic Futurity (RG2) winner Mad About The Moon ($541,279), as well as Handsome Jack Flash and Too Flash For You.

Diamonds N Rainbows is an 11-year-old daughter of Rabbits Rainbow bred by James Lewter. She raced a solid 22 times, found the winner’s circle and finished third in Arealstraitheart’s 2005 Shue Fly Stakes (RG1). She earned $87,773 in her career, as well as a top speed index of 116. The Alvarezes bought the mare in 2010, and bred her to First Moonflash to produce Foxy Moonflash. The mare also produced the 2-year-old full brother named Stone Cold Diamond ($25,390), who won the By By JJ Stakes at Ruidoso.

Her dam, Shines Likea Diamond (Coup De Kas (TB)-Shes My Dash by First Down Dash) was herself a minor stakes winner and produced Diamonds N Rainbow’s full sister, Rainbows N Diamonds ($150,513), who won the 2008 New Mexico Distaff Challenge (G3).

Third dam Shes My Dash was an unraced daughter of First Down Dash bred by American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer Joe Kirk Fulton. Her mother, She’s My Doll, was herself was a stakes-winning daughter of Jet Smooth. This family has members that include the likes of Superior Race Horses Solitary Jet ($58,683) and Victory Mandate ($64,452), stakes winner Toole N Round ($85,900), Grade 1-finalist Cajun Speed ($46,455) and Grade 2-placed runner Heza Bushwacker ($23,367).
