Speed Smith Surprises in Don Boyd Memorial Challenge Stakes

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI—JULY 22, 2012—Making his first start since February, Speed Smith drew clear by one length in the $16,020 Don Boyd Memorial Challenge Stakes on Sunday afternoon at Mt. Pleasant Meadows.

Under jockey Oscar Delgado the 4-year-old covered the 350 yards in a quick :17.503 seconds to earn a 108 speed index. The winner's purse of $7,121 pushed his career earnings mark to $76,551.

Rolando Almanza trains the Prime Talent colt for Cesar Rosales. Sylvia Shaw Pitman bred Speed Smith in Texas from the First Down Dash mare Speedy Empress. He has a 5-4-1 overall record in 18 starts.

Speed Smith paid $25 to win.

Mike Malik's Zoom N Crash was a game second under jockey Lee Gates. The Azoom 6-year-old trained by David Gates finished 1 ¼ lengths in front of the field while earning a 104 speed index. The $3,223 runners-up purse moved his earnings to more than $50,000. Chuck and Terryll Griffeth bred the Oklahoma-bred from the Splash Bac mare Crashin Bac.

Coming off a win in the $102,150 Fort Erie Championship Challenge on July 2, Fearles Fred rallied to late and had to settle for third. Carol Rettele trains the homebred son of Fredricksburg for Walter Harrison. Richard Rettele was aboard the 5-year-old out of the Heza Fast Man mare Precious Debutante. He has earned more than $222,900.

Completing the field were Pescado Fuerte, Tough To Get Six, Eye Walk and Jimmy James 123. Feature Mr Bentley and Ward Ed were both scratched.
