Challenge Championship Spot On The Line In Adequan Arapahoe Derby

AUROA, CO—JUNE 6, 2013—Last year Ultimate Wave used the Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge to qualify for and subsequently win the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.

A spot for this year’s 400-yard, $200,000 Grade 1 race to be held on Challenge Championship night at Los Alamitos Race Course on November 9 will be on the line in Saturday’s 400-yard, $30,000 Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge at Arapahoe Park in Aurora, Colorado.

Fabulous Ocean is the top qualifier in the field of 10. The Hipolito Michel-Valverde-trained Ocean Runaway colt ridden by Russell Vicchrilli captured the first of two two 400-yard derby trials on May 25 in 19.730 seconds. As a 2-year-old last year, Fabulous Ocean won the 400-yard, Grade 3 $130,000 Mile High Futurity, the richest race at Arapahoe Park.

Carters Playmate, who finished a neck behind Fabulous Ocean in the trials, was the second-fastest qualifier in 19.766 seconds. The Carters Cartel colt, who will ridden by Southern California-based jockey Cesar DeAlba for trainer Shae Cox, was also second in the 350-yard, $90,000 Rocky Mountain Futurity at Arapahoe Park last July.

Built Tuff Enough, the Rocky Mountain Futurity winner, won the second trial on May 25 in 19.772 seconds for jockey Zacharie Kelsey and trainer Rudy Ramirez and was the third-fastest qualifier. He is by multiple stakes sire Mighty Invictus.

Secretariat and Arapahoe Park

The Secretariat family will be at Arapahoe Park on Belmont Day in honor of the 40th anniversary of Secretariat’s Triple Crown in 1973. Kate Chenery Tweedy will be at Arapahoe Park signing her book Secretariat’s Meadow about The Meadow family farm in Caroline County, Virginia, where Secretariat was foaled. The book Chenery Tweedy wrote with Leeanne Ladin was published in 2010 by Dementi Milestone Publishing. Chenery Tweedy will also be the guest speaker at Saturday night's Colorado Thoroughbre
