RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 14, 2013—Chin Lee’s Pajarita Sita sped to a daylight win in the first of three trials to establish the fastest qualifying time to the Adequan Ruidoso Downs Derby Challenge on Friday afternoon.
The 10-fastest qualifiers from the trials qualify to race in the 400-yard Adequan Ruidoso Downs Derby on June 29.
A daughter of Pappasito, Pajarita Sita covered the 400 yards in :19.345 to win by an easy one-and-one-quarter lengths under Tanner Thedford.
Pajarita Sita raced to her third-straight win by taking her Adequan Ruidoso Downs Derby Challenge trial. At Sunland Park. she won a $20,000 optional-claiming race and then took a $35,000 allowance race, each at 350 yards.
Nancy McCoy’s Coronas Ice Maiden, second to Pajarita Sita in their trial, was the second-fastest qualifier with a :19.540 mark. The Paul Jones-trained daughter of Wave Carver won her only start as a two-year-old and has a Sunland Park allowance win from three tries this year.
Dwayne Gilbreath saddled Dream Walkin Farms' homebred Shelle Belle Blue to victory in the second trial. Ridden by Roy Baldillez the Jess Louisiana Blue filly posted the third fastest clocking of :19.663 seconds. Gilbreath and Baldillez also qualified the 9th qualifier If I were Famous for Dawn Ivey.
Rockin Disco qualified with the fifth fastest clocking of :19.705 after taking the the final trial for Rockin J Running Horses and Jack Manning. The Rock Solid Jess gelding won last year's John Deere Juvenile Challenge at Ruidoso Downs. He was one of two finalists by second crop sire Rock Solid Jess saddled by trainer Tammy Johnson.
