Whip Curl Punches Ticket for Iowa Championship

SANDY, ID—SEPTEMBER 7, 2014—Whip Curl prevailed in a blanket finish over Cabo Corona and fastest qualifier Betrothen to win the $23,7600 Merial Sandy Distaff Challenge by nose on Sunday. The camera could not separate Cabo Corona and Betrothen who dead-heated in the place position.

Whip Curl pocketed $11,880 for the win and the Carters Cartel filly also earned a starting spot in the $125,000-Guaranteed Merial Distaff Challenge Championship(G1) to be run October 18th during the Bank of America Challenge Championship Night at Prairie Meadows.

Ridden by jockey Eddie Aceves, Whip Curl completed the 400 yards in :19.592 seconds, a 95 speed index with a 10 mph crosswind. Conditioned by Bret Vickery, the Rafter W Stables owned filly doubled her earnings mark to $24,853. Lucas Racing, Inc. bred the brown miss in Maryland from the Runaway Winner mare Runaway Wave. The royally bred filly is a half-sister to world champion Wave Carver and champion Ocean Runaway.

Dallas Erickson rode Cabo Corona to her dead-heat finish for owners Ron and Dolores Coover. Lynn Simpson trains the Corona For Me 4-year-old out of My Lady Amber, by First Down Dash who earned $3,961. Marcus Smith is the breeder.

Ricky and Melinda Overly bred fastest qualifier Betrothen was bred in California. Mark Hanson saddled the Walk Thru Fire filly in her dead-heat finish for RTM Stables, LLC. Ridden by Alan Corson, Betrothen is out of the Rare Bar mare Flo Jo Lady earned $3,861 for her effort.

Feature Miss Alibi, Fearless Fire and Miss Honey Hawk completed the field. Kip Annie Dreamer and Righteous Look completed the field.
