QUARTER RACING JOURNAL—OCTOBER 14, 2017—Carris Cartel overcame a stumble at the break and rallied to win Saturday's 350-yard, $131,300 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G1) at Prairie Meadows.

Saddled by Edelmiro Carrizales for owner Nancy Carrizales, Carris Cartel defeated Jd Wagon Boss by a neck in :17.500 on a sloppy and sealed track. Santos Carrizales rode the homebred daughter of the Louisiana Cartel.

Carris Cartel was bred in Texas, and the filly was making her first start since August 18, when she ran second in a 440-yard All American Futurity (G1) trial at Ruidoso Downs. Carris Cartel is out of Shesa Wicked Gypsy, a winning Strawfly Special mare who finished third in the 2005 Fort Pierre Futurity in South Dakota.

Carris Cartel qualified to this race when she broke her maiden with a one-length victory in the May 20, $70,000 John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge (G3) in Texas.

The filly has won two of her four outs, and the $59,085 winner's share of the purse from her second career stakes score bumped her earnings to $92,504.

Jd Wagon Boss finished second, a neck behind Carris Cartel, and was followed by Apollitical Approach in third.

Runner-up Jd Wagon Boss suffered his first loss in four starts, earning $26,260 to nearly double his earnings to $41,115. Trainer Buckey Stockwell saddled the Pyc Paint Your Wagon colt for himself and Beverly Stockwell. Jean Dillard bred the colt in Oklahoma from the Fishers Dash mare Elly Mae.

Third-place finisher Apollitical Approach is a homebred son of leading sire Apollitical Jess racing for George and Peggy Cobb. John Hammes saddled with Cesar Comez getting the riding call. Out of the Panther Mountain mare Panther Not A Kitty, Apollitical Approach earned $13,130 for the effort.

Tempting Annee GL, Cm Boom Shakalaka, Syms Tlc, High Valley Girl, SC Vapor Trail, Feature Me Gorgeous, Carneros, and Vallerro completed the field.
