LOS ALAMITOS, CA—NOVEMBER 17, 2018—Corona Ranger sprinted to a half-length victory in Saturday's $150,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1) at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Agustin Silva, Corona Ranger covered 400 yards in :19.752. John Stinebaugh prepped the Corona Cartel gelding for owner Vanessa Bartoo of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
Corona Ranger was stretching out in distance off of his third-place finish in a 330-yard, $13,100 allowance dash at Los Alamitos on October 28, his first-ever out at the track. The gelding was bred in Oklahoma by Bollenbach Farms, and he was a $40,000 purchase at the 2016 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. He is out of the Azoom mare Azoom Babe.
Runner-up Mi Amor Secreto races for owner/breeder Kelly Perez. Trainer Edelmiro Carrizales saddled he son of world champion sire The Louisiana Cartel from the Feature Mr Jess mare Streakin In Secret. Ridden by Santos Carrizales, the chestnut gelding earned $30,000 to boost his earnings mark to $87,260.
Jason Olmstead saddled third-place finisher Painted Dynasty for owner Thomas Scheckel. Michael Teel bred the FDD Dynasty filly in Oklahoma from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Tygers Painted Girl. The $15,000 Juvenile earnings pushed Painted Dynasty's earnings just short of $100,000.
Vallerro, Favorite Bling, High Valley Girl, L Bar D Razle Dazle, Sc Vapor Trail, Walcott, and Apollitical Approach completed the the field.
