Dr Tool Hopes To Return In $50,771 Adequan Weber Downs Derby Challenge Final

OGDEN, UT—MAY 23, 2020—Fastest qualifier Dr Tool will be looking to repeat his trial performance on Sunday when he faces a field of 10 in the $50,771 Adequan Weber Downs Derby.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from the May 10th trials will line-up at Weber Downs going 400 yards. The winner will also earn a starting spot in the 2020 $150,000-est. Adequan Derby Challenge Championship(G3) to be contested October 24 at The Downs at Albuquerque as part of the Bank of America Challenge Championship Night.

The race is part of a heavy Sunday stakes card for the Utah track with first post set for noon (MDT). The Adequan Weber Downs Derby Challenge will be run as Race 8 on the card with a 2:55 p.m. (MDT) approximate post-time.

Racing for owner-trainer Luis Gonzalez, Dr Tool enters the race off a two-length trial victory May 10th when he posted the fastest qualifying time. Jockey Jesus Valenzuela will be back in the irons aboard the 3-year-old son of champion Kiss My Hocks.

Bred in Texas by Andy Caulo, from the One Famous Eagle mare Where Eagles Soar, Dr Tool has compiled an (8) 1-2-2 record and earned $36,595. He was third in the $245,946 Downs at Albuquerque-La Fiesta Futurity last September. The bay gelding broke his maiden by 1-¼ lengths in December at Sunland Park but was disqualified and placed last for a positive test. He has earned $35,595.

Stakes winner Thrill Of The Cartel is hoping to bounce off a third-place effort behind Dr Tool in the trials after being in tight early. The son of leading sire Favorite Cartel won three of seven starts at 2 including the Emerald Downs John Deere Juvenile Challenge.

Conditioned by trainer Mark Hanson and racing for Hanson Racing, Robin Dunn and Kevin Dunn the sorrel gelding was a finalist in the $130,625 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship(G2), $91,256 Bittterroot Futurity and $20,000 Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity at 2.

Bred in Texas by Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches, LP, Thrill Of The Cartel has earned $28,626 and will be ridden by his regular rider Jesus Canales from post-position 7.
