RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 11, 2013—Debra Jean Laney’s homebred Mitey Moon will try to live up to her impressive trial win in her career debut when she leads the $356,980 Mountain Top New Mexico-bred Futurity on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.
The Mountain Top Futurity purse is up over 20 percent from the 2012 running.
Mitey Moon, a daughter of champion and first crop sire First Moonflash, overwhelmed her competition when she won the first of 10 trials by two-and-one-quarter lengths and her time of :17.514 stood up as the fastest-qualifying time through the afternoon of trials.
Jaime Parga Leos rides Mitey Moon with the fourth post position.
Gary Thompson’s Threedeewoodee, a $39,000 Ruidoso Sale graduate, could challenge for favoritism after racing to a pair of wins and a second in the New Mexican Spring Futurity from three career outs. The Woodbridge gelding from the Chris Zamora barn was beaten by one-half length and then stepped up with a two-and-three-quarter length Mountain Top Futurity trial win. His time of :17.713 was the sixth-fastest qualifying mark.
Threedeewoodee drew the inside post position and Manuel Gutierrez will be up.
The Kristopher Cordova-owned and -trained Heza Wild Dragon won his first start by three quarters of a length in the Mountain Top trials. The Genuine Strawfly gelding posted the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.587.
Esgar Ramirez, who qualified two horses for the futurity, chose to ride Heza Wild Dragon and they have the third post position.
Racing runs on a Friday through Monday schedule at Ruidoso Downs with a 1 p.m. first post time. There is always free parking and free general admission.
