AJAX, ONT—JUNE 10, 2013—Princess Stakes Futurity winner First Down The Track will head a field of 10 Tuesday in the $30,200 Maple Leaf Derby at Ajax Downs. The daughter of Corona Cartel has been set at 3-1 as the morning-line favorite in the 300 yard event for 3-year-old Quarter Horse and Paints.
The super consistent filly went 2-5-0 in eight tries last season while garnering a win in the $54,936(US) Princess Stakes Futurity on July 10. She was also runner-up in the All Canadian Futurity and a finalist in the Maple Leaf Futurity at Ajax Downs.
Don Reid conditions the sorrel miss for Richard Wincikaby and DK Training Centre. Lance Robinson and Max Anderson bred the earner of more than $90,000 in Utah from the First Down Dash mare First Down Runner. In her only start this season she was a close third in a May 20 Allowance at Ajax.
Corderoy Road will start at 7-2 for owner Michelle Woodley and Marlene McNichol. Woodley trains the stakes winning McNichol homebred. Last season Corderoy Road went 2-1-1 in six starts earning $82,586. The Rock Solid Jess gelding out of Reckless Wish, by Reckless Dash won the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity and was third in third in the Maple Leaf Futurity.
Bryn Robertson will saddle One Famous Glass (4-1) for Dr. Charles Hall, Jamie and Carol Robertson. The One Famous Eagle colt will start off an May 20 Allowance win at Ajax Downs, where he recorded a 97 speed index at 250 yards. Last season the Burnett Ranches, LLC Texas-bred was 1-3-1 in six starts and a finalist in the Maple Leaf Futurity. He is out of the Royal Quick Dash mare Quick Glass.
First post Tuesday at Ajax Downs is 12:55 p.m (EDT). The derby post is expected to go off as the 5th race at 2:43 p.m.
