Top Qualifier Looks To Be The Boss Of PCQHRA Breeders Futurity On Saturday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA— OCTOBER 2, 2014—Donald and Peggy Boyle’s BF Farm Boss blew away his rivals on the way posting the fastest qualifying time to Saturday’s $375,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity at Los Alamitos, a scary thought for his rivals considering that his family of horses tends to get better with age.

“The babies from this family tend to be good sized horses, very rangy, and Thoroughbred looking when they’re two,” said Donald Boyle. “As they get older they mature, fill out, develop the right mind set to become a race horse and they improve. Hopefully if (BF Farm Boss) fits that patter we’ll have a lot of fun with him.”

Not that the Boyles are complaining with the terrific performances that BF Farm Boss has already delivered in 2014. The Oregon-bred son of Hawkinson and out the Boyles’ royal producer, Shirleys Strawfly, BF Farm Boss won his trial to the Ed Burke Million Futurity, finished fourth after breaking last in the Ed Burke final to young superstar and fellow Northwest product, Heza Dasha Fire, and then won his All American Futurity trial by daylight at Ruidoso Downs. His progress continued in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity trial, as BF Farm Boss toyed with his foes while posting a 2¼ length victory on September 14. It was, along with Heza Dasha Fire’s Ed Burke win, among the most impressive efforts by a 2-year-old this season.

“We can’t complain with his freshman year so far,” Boyle said. “The Breeders trial was the first time that he moved away past the two hole (since his maiden race). I don’t think he knew what to do at first. He broke a little green, but (jockey Ramon Sanchez) straightened him out, put him into gear, and he ran down the track like he’s capable of doing. This horse has talent. This family is a little slow starting, but once they catch up they just keep improving. By the time they’re three they do well. (Trainer) Paul Jones has done a great job getting him ready.”

BF Farm Boss’ family included AQHA Racing Champion Strawkins, a Grade 1 winner at both Ruidoso Downs and Los Alamitos Race Course.

“His mother (Shirleys Strawfly) has produced six stakes winners,” Boyle said. “A seventh stakes winner will put her among the top producing mares in AQHA. It was Jimmy Glenn who set me up with the mother of these horses. Her babies just keep running. It’s those moments that keep us small breeders going. It’s a good feeling for small breeders like us. Just to compete here is a real honor.”

BF Farm Boss kept on going in his All American Futurity trial and only a powerful head wind of 14 miles per hour kept him from advancing to the Grade 1 Labor Day classic.

“He pulled away at Ruidoso like he did in the Breeders trials,” Boyle said. “Not quite as much on the field at Ruidoso, but he ran a really nice race there. It was unfortunate that he ran into a 14-15 mile head wins, but that’s how it goes there. He’s paid into the Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million. We’ll see how he comes out of this race.”

The field to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity will also feature Kindergarten Futurity winner Old Girl, who has won four of her five career starts. Owned by Jose Arturo Flores and saddled by Lindolfo Diaz, the Stel Corona filly ran a very professional race when winning her trial race by a half-length. The effort was her first since being disqualified from fourth and placed sixth in her trial to the Governor’s Cup Futurity. That ‘s the only loss of her career. Diaz, a second generation horseman, will be looking for his first major Quarter Horse stakes win as trainer. Leading rider Cruz Mendez will pilot Old Girl, who comes into this race as the richest runner thanks to her Kindergarten win. She’s earned $117,734 in her career.

Bruce and Jill Thompson’s talented Kentucky-bred filly Run By You, who won her trial by a half length. The Apollitical Jess filly is lightly raced and has hit the board in all three of her career outings. Carlos Huerta will ride from post one for trainer Juan Aleman.

Jones will be busy in this race. In addition to BF Farm Boss, he’ll also saddle trial winners HRH Walkonfire and A Goddess Thru Fire for owner Abigail Kawananakoa, and the impressive trial winner Captain Planet for La Presita LLC. Jones will also saddle Myoceanmorey for Tony Doughtie, who was the winning of the 2012 Breeders Futurity, and also Off Beat, the Kindergarten Futurity finalist for owner David Brownell.

Bruce and Jill Thompson’s talented Kentucky-bred filly Run By You, who won her trial by a half length, is another top contender in this race. The Apollitical Jess filly is lightly raced and has hit the board in all three of her career outings. Carlos Huerta will ride from post one.

Link Newcomb’s Kickin Your Can, who finished a game third to Run By You, and Dunn, Chapple and RTM Stables LLC’s James First Affair will complete the field. James First Affair has a first and a second in his two career starts at Los Alamitos.
