PINK DAY: The Race To Whip Cancer Highlights Downs Sunday Program

ALBUQUERQUE, NM—MAY 2, 2015—Pink will be the prevailing color at The Downs at Albuquerque on Sunday, as the track presents “Pink Day: The Race to Whip Cancer” as part of its live racing program. Post time for the first race is set for 1:30 p.m. (MDT).

All proceeds from fund-raising activities on Sunday will go toward breast cancer research and prevention. All jockeys in all races will wear pink silks, the starting-gate crew and outriders will be decked out in pink, and fans are also encouraged to wear pink in support of the cause.

Pink Days have been held at all five New Mexico racetracks for the past several years and have raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and prevention. Longtime New Mexico horsewoman Jamie Zamora organizes the event. A breast cancer survivor, Zamora was honored by the American Quarter Horse Association in 2014 with its prestigious Millie Vessels Achievement Award by the American Quarter Horse Association.

NOTES FROM THE DOWNS: A crowd of 6,713 -- the largest of the season -- was on hand at The Downs on Saturday, drawn primarily by the simulcast of the 141st Kentucky Derby (G1) from Churchill Downs. The race was won by the favorite, American Pharaoh. Firing Line, the winner of the March 22, $800,000 Sunland Derby (G3) at Sunland Park, New Mexico, finished second.
