World Champion JRC Callas First Makes Initial Oklahoma Start In Remington Park Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 30, 2015—The Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Championship may be the third-richest race by purse on the huge “Mega-Card” on Saturday. However, the field of talented older runners gathered in this invitational event more than makes up for the purse stature on a night of major stakes races.

A field of 12 will compete at the classic 440-yard American Quarter Horse distance with a World Champion, a millionaire and potential future superstar all involved.

JRC Callas First, the 2014 AQHA World Champion, will make his first attempt in Oklahoma in the Remington Park Championship. Owned by Dana and Brian Stroud of Southerland, Texas and trained by Brian, JRC Callas First will have regular jockey Damian Martinez up. The 5-year-old Winners Award gelding will make just his second start of the year, trying to rebound from a third-place effort in the $50,000 Sam Houston Classic earlier this month.

A run of seven consecutive victories last year, mostly in major stakes events, sealed the honor as World Champion for JRC Callas First.

Houdini is the lone millionaire in this year’s Remington Park Championship. Owned by Ellen Kennedy Racing of Owasso, Okla. and trained by Luis Villafranco, reigning two-time AQHA Champion Jockey Cody Jensen will have the mount. The 4-year-old Houdini will make his 2015 debut following a year in which he won the $1 million Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs, N.M. The Valiant Hero gelding followed that effort with a third-place run in the $1.9 million All American Derby on Labor Day Weekend.

Overall, Houdini has earned $1,107,994 while winning nine of his 16 career starts, only finishing out of the top three twice.
