Political Candy Tops Opening Ruidoso Select Yearling Session

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—SEPTEMBER 2, 2016—Political Candy, a colt by leading third crop sire Apolltical Jess, was the high seller in Friday's opening session of the 2016 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for $130,000.

Reliance Ranches, LLC purchased the bay colt from the consignment of Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent. Political Candy is the first foal from the stakes winning Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Send Candy Power.

The opening session saw 99 head sell for $2,874,500, an average of $29,035. The median price was $20,000.

A year ago there were nine yearlings that sold for $100,000 or more during the first session. This year, there were four $100,000 sellers.

This correction is tied in a decline in oil and cattle prices along with the uncertainty of an election year. The average dropped from $40,228 (per horse sold final) to $29,215. The addition of more yearlings bringing $100,000 would have drastically boosted the average.

A sister to world champion and leading sire Apolltical Jess was the high-selling filly in Friday's session for $107,000. Marshall Watson purchased the daughter of Mr Jess Perry, out of Apollitical Time by Apollo (TB), from the Julianna Hawn Holt consignment.

Leading trainer Judd Kearl signed a $102,000 ticket for Starfield, a colt by FDD Dynasty from the G1 winning Tres Seis mare Starsmith. MJ Farms, LLC consigned the half-brother to RG2 winner Woodys Allstar and RG2-placed winner Super Star Smith.

Reliance Ranches, LLC led all buyers in the opening session with three purchases for $250,000. Paragon Farms, LLC had four head gross $203,000 and Judd Kearl signed the ticket for three yearlings totaling $165,000.

Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent was the leading consignor or agent Friday night with seven head for $266,000. Grant Farms, LLC had five yearlings gross $226,500 and Bobby D. Cox sold five yearlings for $179,000.

Leading sire One Famous Eagle led all sale sires (by average with two or more sold) in the opening session with 12 head averaging $47,917. All-time leading sire First Down Dash has five head average $47,600 and leading living sire Corona Cartel had five yearlings average $45,600.

Hez Our Secret was the leading "first sale crop" sire (by average with two or more sold) with two yearlings averaging $21,500. Jess Lips had two yearlings average $12,250.
