Quarter Horse Stakes Night features more than $625,000 in purses at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

SHELBYVILLE, IN—OCTOBER 19, 2016—As the 2016 racing season nears completion, Indiana’s top Quarter Horses will be in the spotlight for the sixth and final all-Quarter Horse event set for Saturday, Oct. 22. The evening includes four stakes on the nine-race program with purses in excess of $625,000.

Heading the list of stakes races is the eighth running of the $190,600 Miss Roxie Little Futurity, the second richest stakes race in the state of Indiana. CB Come Fly With Me and jockey Rolando Pina were extremely impressive in the trials and lead the field of 10 as the early favorites.

Trained by Joe Davis, who is having a banner year, and owned by Carolyn Bruce, Desirio freshman filly is currently on a three-race win streak. She begins her journey from post eight in the Little Final, carded as the seventh on the card.

Joining the Miss Roxie Little Futurity on the stellar card for Quarter Horses is the 20th running of the $139,440 Governor’s Stake, one of three original stakes races held during the inaugural season of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in 1997.

Tommy The Train made his Indiana debut an impressive one in the trials, posting the quickest time for the 350 yard dash. Under the direction of jockey David Pinon, the two-year-old Freighttrain B gelding will be looking for his third straight win for trainer Larry Sharp and owners Brant and Jon Barley and Brad Sharp. Tommy The Train has raced his entire career in Oklahoma and is three for five heading into the final, which is his first try in stakes action. He begins from post four in the 10-horse final, carded as the eighth on the program.

Other stakes races on the card dedicated to sprinters includes the fourth running of the $86,920 Indiana Championship, set as the sixth race, and the 20th running of the $130,360 QHRAI Derby, also a stakes race from the inaugural 1997 Quarter Horse season at Hoosier Park. The QHRAI Derby will be the final race on the card running 400 yards to complete the special program.

In addition to action on the track, several activities will take place for racing fans. Martha Claussen, Wrangler Q-Racing Ace, will be on hand to offer additional handicapping advice for Quarter Horse racing and will join Rachel McLaughlin, racing broadcast production manager, for the “Wire to Wire” preview show.

In addition, Claussen will offer items from AQHA from the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) table outside the winner’s circle. She will also pass out free $2 race wagers to the first 100 fans that visit the booth.

QHRAI will also provide long sleeved t-shirts to guests during the night, while supplies last.

Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, Oct. 29. Racing will be held during the final week of competition Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:05 PM EST with Saturday racing beginning at 6:05 PM.
