TUCSON, AZ—FEBRUARY 9, 2017—A total of 15 3-year-olds has been entered in Saturday’s 350-yard Rillito Derby trials, as historic Rillito Park in Tucson opens its winter meet with a eight-race program.
Post time for the first race, the first Rillito Derby trial, is set for 1 p.m. (MST).
Alvaro Monteverde’s Cowboys Dynasty, a stakes-winning FDD Dynasty colt trained by his owner, drew post 8 and will be ridden by Jesus Osuna in the second trial. Cowboys Dynasty is coming off of a juvenile campaign during which he scored a 1 1/4-length victory in the December 11, 400-yard Arizona QRA Futurity at Turf Paradise.
Other prominent sophomores entered in the Rillito Derby trials include Juan G. Sepulveda’s Sniper 1, a multiple stakes placed son of The Bounty Man trained by Heraclio Botello. The gelding has earned $7,475 from five outs, and his resume includes third-place finishes in last year’s 400-yard Margie Bryan Arizona Stallion Owners Futurity (R) and 350-yard AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity.
Osuna has been named to ride Sniper 1 from post 6 in the first heat.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the February 26, $7,500-added Rillito Derby final.
