SUNLAND PARK, NM—MARCH 15, 2017—Mountain Moon Flash, a maiden special weight winner in his debut on March 3, is one of 85 state-bred 2-year-olds entered in Friday’s 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) trials at Sunland Park.
The 3-1 morning-line favorite in the third of nine trials, Mountain Moon Flash is a gelded son of champion First Moonflash owned by Dwayne Johnson, Lisa Saumell, and trainer Paul Jones. Mountain Moon Flash drew post 3 and will be ridden by Raul Herrera.
Bigg Daddy, a sorrel son of Big Daddy Cartel and champion Alice K White trained by Wes Giles for owner Too For Too, will be ridden by Adrian Ramos from post 4 in the sixth heat. A $25,000 purchase at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the gelding is a half brother to 2015 AQHA champion 3-year-old filly Astica.
Daddys Leader drew post 10 and will be ridden by Daniel Amaya in the second trial. A $20,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, the Big Daddy Cartel gelding is owned and trained by Juan M. Esquivel, and he is out of Leading Diva, a graded stakes winning daughter of world champion Special Leader.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the April 8, $300,000-est. New Mexican Spring Futurity final.
