PHOENIX, AZ—MARCH 22, 2017—Amado de la Riva’s Apollitical Boogie, a stakes-winning son of Apollitical Jess, is one of 27 sophomores entered in Saturday’s 350-yard AQRA President’s Open Spring Derby trials at Turf Paradise.
A homebred gelding trained by Eloy Mendoza, Apollitical Boogie made his 3-year-old debut with a sixth-place finish in a 400-yard Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) trial on January 21. The gelding has earned $26,685 from seven outs, and his two wins include a 1 1/2-length victory in last year’s John Deere Turf Paradise Juvenile Challenge.
Apollitical Boogie drew post 5 and will be ridden by Rodolfo Arvizu in the last of three trials.
Cowboys Dynasty, a son of champion FDD Dynasty owned and trained by Alvaro Monteverde, drew post 7 and will be ridden by Jesus Osuna in the second heat. The colt ended his 2-year-old campaign with a 1 1/4-length win in the December 11, 400-yard AQRA Futurity at Turf Paradise.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $45,000-est. AQRA President’s Open Spring Derby on April 8..
