SUNLAND PARK, NM—MARCH 29, 2017—LMG Racing’s Mojo Perry, a sorrel daughter of champion Mr Jess Perry and the fastest qualifier, drew the rail post for Saturday’s 400-yard, $162,600 West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park.
A $30,000 yearling purchase at the 2015 Ruidoso Select Sale, Mojo Perry is trained by Chris Zamora, who as a jockey rode Deuces Nonnegotiable to a victory in the 2005 West Texas Derby (G2). The filly is coming off of a convincing 1 3/4-length victory in the third of five West Texas Derby trials on March 10.
Mojo Perry has won three of 11 starts and has banked $71,797, and she was a finalist in last year’s Ruidoso (G1) and West Texas (G2) futurities. Salvador Martinez will ride Mojo Perry on Saturday.
Other contenders include Eaglelistic, a gelded son of Flyingwitheagles trained by Cody Reynolds for owner Donnie E. Johnson. Eaglelistic has earned $50,068 from nine outs, and he is coming off of a 2-year-old season during which he ran third in both the Hobbs America (G2) and Four Corners futurities.
Eaglelistic drew post 3 and will be ridden by Mauro Salcedo.
The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds:
- Mojo Perry (Salvador Martinez), 7-2
- Wild Mares Milk (Esgar Ramirez), 4-1
- Eaglelistic (Mauro Salcedo), 8-1
- Bella Faccia (Jesse Levario), 12-1
- Tarrant (Jose Luis Enriquez), 10-1
- Famouseagletime (Adrian Ramos), 10-1
