Fifty-Nine Set To Run In Governor’s Cup Futurity Trials On Saturday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JULY 6, 2017—Darling Farms, Jaime Gomez, and Ernesto Solis’ J Fire Up, the runner-up in the $1,000,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity last month, and Kindergarten Futurity finalists Dont Foose With Me, Summertime Favorite, Mucho Bravado, and Seems Even Better are among the 59 freshman sprinters racing in the Governor’s Cup Futurity trials on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Seven trials are on tap with the horses with the 10 fastest times moving on to the Governor’s Cup final on Saturday, July 29.

Trained by Gomez and to be ridden by jockey Jose Nicasio, J Fire Up really shined in the Ed Burke Million on June 18. The Kiddy Up filly battled Ed Burke Million winner KVN Corona every step of the way, while gamely holding off the highly-regarded Chance To Fire to finish second at 21-1 odds.

After racing from the rail in the Ed Burke Million final, J Fire Up will move to the outside post number nine for the opening Governor’s Cup Futurity trial, which will be the third race on the nine-race card Saturday. J Fire Up will be facing John Firth’s Mucho Bravado, the sixth place finisher in the Kindergarten.

The second trial will feature Davidson and Cannon’s Wild Wonder, a colt by Walk Thru Fire that will be making his third career start after breaking his maiden by 1 1/4 lengths on April 9. Wild Wonder also defeated Ron Hartley’s talented The Revenant in an allowance race on May 28. Trainer Charles Treece has been pointing Wild Wonder to these trials all season long. He’s one to watch.

Spackman Racing and Lin Melton’s Dont Foose With Me will enter these trials after his second-place finish to Fire And Sass in the Kindergarten Futurity. The Idaho-bred runner by Foose made a big run in the 300-yard Kindergarten final. He should love the added 50 yards in these trials. Rosenthal Ranch LLC’s Effortless Effort, an impressive winner in his two career starts, could also shine in this heat.

Ed Allred’s Resolutely will head a very competitive fourth trial, while Abigail Kawananakoa’s Chance To Fire looks like the one to beat in the fifth. Chance To Fire will enter this race after finishing third in the Ed Burke Million final.

Paul Jones and Thompson Racing’s Summertime Favorite, third in the Kindergarten final, is the leading name in the sixth trial of the night, while Allred’s Seems Even Better, fifth in the Kindergarten, and The Revenant will face off in the final heat.
