All-Quarter Horse Card at Indiana Grand Features Two Stakes, Trials

SHELBYVILLE, IN-—JULY 6, 2017-—Indiana Grand will present an eight-race all-Quarter Horse program on Saturday. Post time for the first race is set for 6:05 p.m. (CDT).

A full field of 10 3-year-olds has been entered back in Saturday’s 400-yard, $81,500 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby, topped by fastest qualifier Jess Kool Lady. A bay daughter of Apollitical Jess trained by Victor Olivo for owner Enrique Ibarra, Jess Kool Lady is coming off of a dominating 3 3/4-length victory in the last of two trials on June 24.

Jess Kool Lady has earned $42,124 from four starts this year, and her season resume includes a fourth-place finish in the 350-yard, $251,000 Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park on March 25. The filly drew post 4 and will be ridden by Giovani Vazquez-Gomez.

Other contenders include Tommy The Train, a gelded son of Freighttrain B who has won all three of his races at Indiana Grand, including last year’s 350-yard, $139,000 Governor’s Stakes. Trained by Larry Sharp for owners Brant Barley, Jon Barley, and Brad Sharp, Tommy The Train has won five of nine starts and has banked $106,588.

James Flores will ride Tommy The Train from post 9.

Bradford Stakes

Parti Favor, a 5-year-old son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon owned and trained by Joe M. Davis, drew post 3 for Saturday’s 400-yard, $52,900 Bradford Stakes.

Parti Favor will be making his second start of the season in this race. Last year, the brown gelding assembled a three-race win streak at Indiana Grand that included a clear 1 3/4-length victory in the Bradford Stakes.

Rolando Pina will ride Parti Favor, whose nine opponents include Woop Dee Doo. A 4-year-old Good Reason Sa gelding owned and trained by Ricardo Martinez, Woop Dee Doo is coming off of a sophomore campaign during which he ran second, a head behind winner Gyr Jammer, in the 400-yard, $370,000 Heritage Place Derby (G2) at Remington Park.

Woop Dee Doo drew post 8 and will be ridden by Cristian Esqueda.

Also on Saturday, a total of 24 2-year-olds has been entered in three 300-yard Heartland Futurity trials. Cynthia Allen’s Sr Shambles, a son of Desirio trained by Jeannette Hoover, is coming off of a seventh-place finish in last Saturday’s $274,000 Firecracker Futurity (G2) at Delta Downs. The gelding drew post 8 and will be ridden by James Flores in the third heat.

The field for the Blue River Derby (R) for Indiana-bred sophomores will also be decided on Saturday, as 26 3-year-olds have been entered in three trials. Zoomin B Cartel, a homebred gelding by The Louisiana Cartel trained by Randy Smith for owners Gordon Timm and Vicki Lundstrum, will make his season debut from post 6 in the first 400-yard heat. Zoomin B Cartel ended his juvenile campaign with a neck victory at odds of 15-1 in the 350-yard, $191,000 Miss Roxie Little Futurity (R). Berkley Packer will ride Zoomin B Cartel on Saturday.
