RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 31, 2017—Ted Abrams’ homebred world champion Jessies First Down racing in the Grade 2, $50,000 Mr Jet Moore Handicap at 400 yards and Pink Day at the Races make Saturday one of the most enticing days of racing at Ruidoso Downs.

First post time is 1 p.m. and there is always free parking and free general admission.

Orchestrated by Jamie Zamora, a breast cancer survivor, Pink Day at the Races boosts awareness of breast cancer by raising funds for local breast cancer charities throughout New Mexico. This year, money will help women involved in New Mexico horseracing get mammograms at the Lincoln County Medical Center.

About one in eight women in the United States (about 12 percent) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the United States along with 63,410 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.

Zamora also holds Pink Days at Zia Park, Sunland Park and The Downs at Albuquerque.

The events include all the jockeys wearing pink silks, a silent auction and best dressed pony horse. It is also an inviting family event with face painting and numerous games for kids. There is something for kids of all ages.

Plus, there is the best horse racing.

Jessies First Down, the third-ranked older horse in the nation, is pointing at the Grade 1, $200,000 All American Gold Cup at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday, September 3. That is also the date the Grade 1, $1.5-million All American Derby is held. The Grade 1, $3-million All American Futurity in on the following day.

A six-year-old gelded son of FDD Dynasty, Jessies First Down earned his world championship with three-consecutive wins against Grade 1 company to complete his 2016 campaign. He won the $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap at Lone Star Park, the $150,000 Zia Park Championship and the $350,000 The Championship at Sunland Park.

Jessies First Down won five consecutive races — including the three Grade 1 stakes at the end of 2016 — before finishing a close second behind the number-one ranked Zoomin Effortlessly in the Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Invitational on June 3, his most recent start.

Two starts ago, Jessies First Down won the Grade 2, $103,320 Bank of America Sam Houston Championship Challenge.

Regular rider Rodrigo Sigala Vallejo is aboard Jessies First Down with the outside post position in the 10-horse field.

First Valiant Sign and Sam Crow are also probable runners in the All American Gold Cup.

Owned by R.D. Hubbard, Derrol Hubbard, Scott Bryant, Joe Dee Brooks and R. Lee Lewis, First Valiant Sign is making his 2017 debut in the Mr Jet Moore.

As a two-year-old in 2015, First Valiant Sign won the Grade 1, $750,000 Ruidoso Futurity, was a late-running second in the Grade 1, $1-million Rainbow Futurity and fourth at 3-1 odds in the Grade 1, $3-million All American Futurity.

A gelded son of Valiant Hero, First Valiant Sign won last year’s Grade 1, $362,848 Dash For Cash Derby, finished fourth in the Grade 1, $1.2-million Rainbow Derby as the 8-5 favorite and qualified for the Grade 1, $2.4-million All American Derby.

First Valiant Sign was a $100,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase and has earned $1,035,344.

G.R. Carter Jr. rides First Valiant Sign from the ninth post position, next to Jessies First Down.

Valeriano Racing Stables’ Sam Crow, a $40,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, is always dangerous. He has been among the top-three finishers in 17 of 20 starts and would become a millionaire with a win in the Mr Jet Moore. His earnings stand at $980,677.

Another gelded son of Valiant Hero, Sam Crow is in peak form. In his sole Ruidoso Downs start this summer, he crossed the finish line in third place in the Higheasterjet Handicap, however was disqualified and placed last.

Sam Crow had an excellent spring at Remington Park. He won that track’s version of the $62,000 Mr Jet Moore Stakes and raced to close seconds in the $100,000 Sooner State Stakes and the $62,000 Mighty Deck Three Stakes. Those races were for Oklahoma-breds.

Trainer Trey Wood will have Ricky Ramirez aboard Sam Crow with the fourth post position.
