Ruidoso stakes winner Mr Perry Strong will head a field of 10 in Sunday’s 400-yard, $201,550 Hobbs America Futurity (G2) at Zia Park.

Hobbs America Futurity, Derby Set For Sunday

HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 5, 2017—Mr Perry Strong, a stakes winner during the Ruidoso Downs summer meet, is one of 10 2-year-olds entered back in Sunday’s 400-yard, $201,550 Hobbs America Futurity (G2) at Zia Park.

Trained by Mike Joiner for owner Licon Farm and Ranch LLC, Mr Perry Strong has earned $47,396 from five starts, and his two wins include a three-quarter length victory in the 350-yard, $100,000 Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational Stakes on June 11. The gelded son of champion Mr Jess Perry drew post 5 and will be ridden by Salvador Martinez.

Victor Lozano’s Phantom Fury, a son of One Sweet Jess trained by Jose Luis Muela and the fastest qualifier, drew post 3 and will be ridden by Jose Luis Enriquez. The morning-line favorite, the gelding is coming off of a two-length victory as the even-money favorite in the last of five trials on September 23.

Hobbs America Derby

Imperial Eagle, a gray son of One Famous Eagle owned by the Estate of Charles Robinson and Christina Robinson, is the 4-5 morning-line favorite for Sunday’s 440-yard, $151,500 Hobbs America Derby (G3).

Last year’s AQHA champion 2-year-old, Imperial Eagle has won nine of 14 starts, including last year’s Grade 1, 440-yard All American Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs, and he has earned $1,789,521. The gelding has won three of five starts and has banked $68,014 this year, and his season resume includes a neck victory as the even-money choice in the June 10, $100,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes at Ruidoso Downs.

Imperial Eagle drew post 10 and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez.
