Far West Futurity Trials All Set For Monday At Portland Meadows

By Tom Harris

PORTLAND, OR—OCTOBER 15, 2017—The first three races of the Monday card in The City of Roses will be the trials for The Far West Futurity at 350 yards for two year old Quarter Horses. Each trial event will be worth just shy of $4,000 with the ultimate prize being a birth into the Far West Futurity.

A total of 20 two year olds are entered to dash for a chance to dance in the final which is slated to be run on Monday, October 30th with a $15,000 added value (Last year’s race was worth over $30,000).

Chris Philbrook’s I Deliver looks to be the one to beat in the first trial event after the young son of One Sweet Jess recently finished a solid second in The Juvenile Challenge at Emerald Downs on August the 20th.

Trained by Hector Magallanes with Jockey Eduardo Sosa to guide, I Deliver won The $28,000 Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass on July 4th this year in a blazing time of 17:66 for 350 yards.

Trainer Magallanes also saddles Heza Eagle who arrives from Los Alamitos in California after facing tough futurity rivals there. Jockey Jake Samuels will ride Heza Eagle in the Portland debut for the offspring of One Famous Eagle. Don’t Hezitate won The Futurity Consolation at Grants Pass to close out her 2017 campaign there. Trained by John Harris with Robert Burney to pilot the Ivory James filly.

In the second race and trial of the day, Trainer Pablo Madrigal will send Fierce Hawk post-ward under the guidance of veteran pilot Lorenzo Lopez after winning a two year old stakes race at Prineville last Summer. The gelding by Fastnfierce covered the 250 yards in a quick time of 13:67 on a fast track. Fierce Hawk makes his fourth start lifetime in The Far West Trials.

Trained by Hector Magallanes, This Wagons On Fire chased the aforementioned Fierce Hawk in that summertime dash at Prineville. Eduardo Sosa will get the leg up aboard the colt by Paintyourownwagon. Three Dashin Bye looks to be a main rival in the second heat of the day with a strong finish in her maiden showing on opening week at Portland Meadows. Robert Burney will guide for Trainer Scott Raley.

Sporting the colors of K & R Allred Ranch, LLC , One For The Brothers is fresh off of a game maiden win upon arrival from Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. Sired by One Famous Eagle, the two year old Arizona bred colt stopped the clock at 300 yards in a time of 16:23 over a fast track . Jockey Eduardo Sosa will ride for Trainer Hector Magallanes.

Adrian Quinones’s Owned and Trained Diva Has It was impressive in her maiden victory on opening day at Portland. Lorenzo Lopez will handle the riding assignment for the young filly by One Sweet Jess.
