LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JANUARY 17, 2018—An outstanding field of Quarter Horses in which seven of the eight starters have won at least one stakes race at Los Alamitos will get together in the $25,000 Cypress Handicap at 350 yards on Friday at Los Alamitos. First post is 7 p.m.

The richest runner in the field is Ron Hartley’s One Proud Eagle with $304,983 in career earnings. Trained by John Cooper, the gelding by One Famous Eagle won the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity and John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship in 2016 to pick up most of his bankroll.

He’s also been a consistent performer throughout, hitting the board in 10 of 13 career starts. Cesar De Alba will ride the Hartley-bred runner, who’ll carry 123 pounds.

A1A Racing LLC’s Tarzanito is the second richest in the field with $252,148 in his account. He’s missed the board in his last two most recent outings, but the talented Favorite Cartel colt was second in the 2016 Golden State Million Futurity and in 2017 won the 2017 Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap and qualified to the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby.

Eddie Garcia, this track’s all-time leading rider in Quarter Horse wins and Quarter Horse stakes wins, will ride Tarzanito, who’ll carry 124 pounds.

Larry Stark’s Jess A Cowboy and Eva Carrazco’s Stelfast are the co-high weights at 125 pounds. The 6-year-old Dejon gelding won the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap and He Flys Handicap at Los Alamitos last year, while Stelfast took home top honors in the El Primero Del Ano Derby on April 2. Stelfast has made $192,039 in his 21-race career, while Jess A Cowboy has pocketed $170,218.

The field will also feature Hartley and Cooper’s AJS Anna Smoke, winner of the 2016 Governor’s Cup Futurity; Celina Molina’s multiple stakes winning 6-year-old Viento Negro; and Paul Jones and Abigail Kawananakoa’s Evil Genius, winner of the 2017 Governor’s Cup Derby. Thomas Ramos’ GS Wintemeyer has not won a stakes yet, but has done well recently.
