West Texas Derby Headlines Stakes Doubleheader at Sunland Park
Graded winner Everybuddys Talkin will head the $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (RG3) on Saturday at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.

SUNLAND PARK, NM—MARCH 27, 2018—He Be Flashy, a graded stakes placed son of champion First Moonflash, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s 400-yard, $187,916 West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park.

The second-fastest qualifier, He Be Flashy is trained by John M. Cooper for owners Jack Manning, Beth Cobb, and Diane Norwood. The gelding has banked $73,615 from seven races, all in New Mexico, and his 2-year-old resume includes a second-place finish, a neck behind winner A Passion For Flashn, in the 400-yard, $300,000 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park.

He Be Flashy drew post 3 and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez.

Other contenders include Joyce D. Erickson’s Jessica Alexandra, a Grade 2-placed homebred Apollitical Jess filly trained by Donna McArthur. The runner-up to Papaws Paint in last year’s Grade 2, $202,000 Hobbs America Futurity at Zia Park, Jessica Alexandra has won three of 10 starts and has earned $62,345.

Jessica Alexandra drew the rail post and will be ridden by Bonifacio Perez.

Sunburst Stakes (RG3)

Also on Saturday, a dozen New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies have been entered in the 350-yard, $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (RG3).

Eric Pineda’s Everybuddys Talkin, a graded stakes winning Gonna Ro Sham Bo filly trained by Ricardo Armendariz, drew post 8 and will be ridden by Raul Herrera. Everybuddys Talkin’s season record includes a three-quarter length victory in the January 14, 400-yard Shue Fly Stakes at Sunland Park.

Two Wines, a daughter of Jesse James Jr trained by Justin Joiner for owner Doug Ruby, will be making her season debut in the Sunburst. Two Wines is coming off of a juvenile campaign during which she banked $96,234 from seven races and ran second, a neck behind winner Jess Hot, in the September 23, 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Futurity (R) at Albuquerque Downs.

Two Wines drew the rail post and will be ridden by Salvador Martinez.
