Fastest qualifier Mildred Didrickson returns Sunday to headline the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity at Canterbury Park.

SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 6, 2018—The biggest race of the Canterbury Park Quarter Horse meet headlines a card of four stakes on Sunday: the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity.

Five trials were held on Sunday (Jun 16) to determine the final field. The sloppy, sealed track produced the fastest time in the second trial as Mildred Didrickson and Nakia Ramirez covered the 350-yard trial in 17.782 and earned a 99 speed index. Ramirez recently picked up her first Canterbury Park stakes in with a win in the Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge on July 4 with Kowboy Jim.

Mildred Didrickson was the third choice of the betting public in her trial, despite having raced three times at Remington Park. She broke her maiden by a length in her third lifetime start and earned a 93 speed index. The Desirio filly is trained by Jason Pascoe and is owned by Milena Kwiecien.

Mildred Didrickson was bred in Oklahoma by Nancy Yearsly and J. Garvin Kelly; she is out of the Country Quick Dash mare Valdarama.

The second and third fastest qualifiers came out of the same race and drew next to each other on the inside: Maghelene and Miss Energy P.

Maghelene is trained by leading trainer Jason Olmstead and will be ridden by current leading jockey Cristian Esqueda. She is owned by Tom Scheckel. The daughter of One Famous Eagle was bred in Oklahoma by Jj Cool L LLC, out of Belle Helene, who was second in the 2013 $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso and has career earnings of over $200,000. Belle Helene is also a half-sister to A Revenant, who won the 2016 $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) and earned over $600,000 in four career starts.

Miss Energy P boasts an impressive pedigree as well: she is out of the First Down Dash mare First Down Energy, making Miss Energy P a half-sister to Terrific Energy, a multiple graded stakes winning mare who also produced stakes winners such as Terrific Synergy and Thermonuclear Energy. She was bred in Texas by Bielau Oaks.

The Pyc Paint Your Wagon filly is owned by Michael Pohl and is trained by Stacy Charette-Hill. Jorge Torres was aboard, who also rode the filly in her maiden-breaking debut at Remington Park.

The $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity is Race 5 on Sunday, July 8. Estimated post time is 2:45 pm CT.

Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile

Horses that did not qualify for the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity were eligible for the $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile.

The 3-1 morning line favorite is Chocolatepaintedkiss, ridden by Jorge Torres and trained by Stacy Charette-Hill. Chocolatepaintedkiss broke her maiden at Remington and was the post-time favorite in her trial, the first of five from June 16, but she finished in fourth place. The first three finishers all qualified to the final, including Bhr Flashing Effort, who also won the Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity last month.

Chocolatepaintedkiss is a homebred for Mary Kirby, bred in Oklahoma by Second Painted Sign and out of the Azoom mare Ramblin Kisses.

Though still a maiden, Sunlight Seven will be one to watch after finishing third in her trial behind the second and third fastest qualifiers Maghelene and Miss Energy P. Sunlight Seven is out of the Ivory James mare Midnight Sunlight, who won the Northlands Futurity in 2012.

Vic Hanson trains the Valiant Hero filly for owner and breeder Brenda Reiswig; Brayan Velazquez has the call.

The 2018 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse stakes schedule includes 16 stakes races worth over $660,000. The 70-day race meet offers racing on Thursday and Friday evenings at 6:30 pm CT and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 12:45 pm CT. in June and July. Quarter horse racing is held at the beginning of each race card.
