Wood Pair In Mr Jet Moore On Pink Day at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 31, 2018—Trainer Blane Wood has the dangerous pair of Myst Fit and High Plains Perry in the Grade 2, $50,000 Mr Jet Moore Handicap on a special Saturday at Ruidoso Downs.

Saturday is also Pink Day (see related story) with many activities to raise breast cancer awareness and provide mammograms through the Lincoln County Medical Center. The festivities begin at noon, one hour before first post time.

This racing weekend, Friday through Sunday, is also the first City Bank "Chili The Kid" Wine and Beer Festival. It is located in a large tent next to Billy The Kid Casino.

Patrons will purchase a ticket to the tent, and wine and beer sampling is included along with a souvenir mug or wine glass. Tickets are $20 on Saturday, $15 on Sunday, or $20 for both days. There is a special VIP dinner on Friday night for $25.

The 400-yard Mr Jet Moore for three-year-old and older quarter horses is traditionally a major prep race for the Grade 1, $200,000 All American Derby at 440-yards on September 2.

This year's edition is a highly competitive race filled with quality stakes performers. Each horse in the full field of 10 runners is a stakes winner or qualified for a Grade 1 race.

The Wood barn sends out Newman Cattle Company and Bobby Simmons' Myst Fit along with Paragon Farms, LLC's High Plains Perry.

Myst Fit is in top form after winning the Grade 3, $50,000 Higheasterjet Handicap at Ruidoso Downs on June 30.

"He's a solid horse and has always been solid," said Trey Wood, who was overlooking his father Blane's barn while Blane was at a horse sale. "He's awesome. When he gets away (from the gate) he's tough to beat."

A four-year-old gelded son of Separatist, Myst Fit won the 2017 Grade 3, $251,000 Oklahoma Derby and then came to Ruidoso Downs and qualified for the Grade 1, $1,150,000 Rainbow Derby and the Grade 1, $1,365,000 All American Derby.

Raul Ramirez Jr., who was aboard for the Higheasterjet win, is the jockey with the second post position.

High Plains Perry is a talented gelding by Mr Jess Perry who was superb last summer at Ruidoso Downs. He was a close third, beaten by only a nose, in the Grade 1, $800,000 Ruidoso Derby and then second in the Rainbow Derby.

In his only start this year, he was fifth in the $50,000 Bob Moore Stakes at Remington Park. He was only one-half length behind the winner in the blanket finish.

"At Remington Park, he had a paralyzed flapper," Trey Wood said. A flapper (arytenoid cartilage) is located in the upper airway. A paralyzed flapper can restrict airflow to the lungs and from the lungs. "He had surgery and has had two works since the surgery."

He is by far the best that I've seen him since the first of last year."

Regular rider Ricky Ramirez rides High Plains Perry from the fourth post position.

Johnny Trotter's Bodacious Eagle is the 3-1 morning-line favorite on the strength of his strong stakes resume.

Bodacious Eagle comes off a third-place run in the Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Invitational on June 2.

Last year, the gelded son of One Famous Eagle won the Grade 2, $50,000 Eastex Handicap, the Grade 1, $100,000 Leo Stakes and the Grade 3, $50,000 Higheasterjet Handicap in successive starts. He went to Los Alamitos Race Course in the fall and finished second in the Grade 1, $125,000 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Championship.

Trainer Mike Joiner will have jockey Cody Jensen ride Bodacious Eagle for the first time. They will start from the first post position.

Nueve Racing's Apolltical Chad, a $38,000 Ruidoso Select Sale yearling purchase, comes off a throw-out race in the Higheasterjet when he reared at the start.

The classy gelding by Appollitical Jess won the 2016 Grade 1, $1,000,000 Ruidoso Futurity. Last year, the member of the Wes Giles stable qualified for Ruidoso Derby and the Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs. He went on to win the Grade 1, $384,000 Texas Classic Derby at Los Star Park.

G.R. Carter Jr. rides Apolltical Chad from the sixth post position.
