RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 18, 2018—A 2019 foal in utero by 1981 World Champion Special Effort from the dam of champion and leading first-crop sire Five Bar Cartel sold for $65,000 Saturday night at Ruidoso Downs.

The second annual Ruidoso 'Foal In Utero' sale was conducted as a session of the annual Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Yearling sale.

Eighteen of 23 foals in utero offered, sold for a $356,7000 gross, $19,817 average and $15,000 median.

Joe Dee Brooks signed the ticket on Hip 225 by Special Effort out of Grade 1 Vessels Maturity winner Five Bar Molly by Dash Ta Fame. She is the dam of 11 winners, four black-type including champion Five Bar Cartel and RG2 winner Fly Bar Special. Dr. Rick Beck is the consignor.

Special Effort won the Kansas, Rainbow and All American Futurities in 1981 to become the only 2-year-old in history to win the Quarter Horse Triple Crown. As a sire he has had 75 stakes winners, 6 champions and earnings of nearly $19 million.

West Texas Racing Partnership paid $50,000 for Hip 230, a Mr Jess Perry foal in utero out of RG1 winner Hidden Dragon by Dean Miracle. The 2019 foal will be a half-sibling to graded stakes winners Heza Wild Dragon and Zulu Dragon.

Melvin and Susan Neugbauer paid $35,000 for Hip 231, a foal in Utero by leading sire Tres Seis from the grade 1 winning Strawfly Special mare Last Shall Be First. She is the dam of four black type including World Champion Last To Fire.

An Apollitical Jess foal in utero out of Rock Candy Sa by Good Reason Sa brought a final bid of $30,000 from Jaime Gomez. Randy Hill, Agent for Michael Pohl consigned Hip 235. This will be the first foal of the half-sister to seven black type runners from the family of champion Jess Good Candy.

Jaime Gomez was the sale's leading buyer with three purchases totaling $70,000. Dr. Rick Beck was the leading consignor with three foals in utero selling for $105,000.
