Jess Move You After Second Derby Win In $1.2-Million All American Derby Sunday

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 28, 2018—Ricardo Bernal and Reymundo Resendez's Jess Move You — winner of the Grade 1, $759,000 Ruidoso Derby — has a solid chance to score his second derby win at Ruidoso Downs in the Grade 1, $1,237,604 All American Derby on Sunday afternoon.

Supporting the All American Derby is the $100,000 F-irst Down Dash for horses who did not qualify for the All American Derby. The All American Derby and the First Down Dash are each at 440 yards.

First post time is noon for each day of the final weekend of the racing season (Friday through Monday) at Ruidoso Downs.

Jess Move You has been a pleasant surprise this summer as he matured into a Grade 1 derby horse for trainer Rudy Valles. He showed his potential back in April when he won the $25,000 Animas Stakes at SunRay Park in Farmington. That was the first win of a three-race winning streak.

The winning streak reached its pinnacle when Jess Move You raced down the inside of the Ruidoso Downs' track to win the 400-yard Ruidoso Derby by a commanding three quarters of a length.

Jess Move You had a throw-out race in the Grade 1, $802,000 Rainbow Derby

when he had a terrible start and never had a chance. The gelding returned to his winning form when he won his All American Derby trial.

"He's doing well," said Valles. "He hasn't shown any signs of fatigue or soreness."

A gelding by leading sire Apollitical Jess, Jess Move You's trainer Valles, 24, is believed to be the second-youngest trainer to win a Grade 1 stakes. He pulled off that major feat when Jess Move You won the Ruidoso Derby. Valles came back the next day to win the Grade 1, $1,000,000 Ruidoso Futurity with Blue Corazon.

"I didn't think anything (like this summer's success) would happen, but I'm glad it did," said Valles.

Jose Amador Alvarez rides Jess Move You from the fifth post position.

Jack Smith Farms' Hes Limitless, who went through the All American Select Yearling Sale for $105,000, is superbly bred and is in sharp form for trainer John Stinebaugh. The gelding is by leading sire Corona Cartel and his dam Pj Chick In Black was the 2012 champion two-year-old filly and winner of the 2012 Grade 1, $600,000 Ruidoso Futurity.

The fourth-place runner in last year's All American Futurity, Hes Limitless came back this year to finish second in the Rainbow Derby and was a troubled second in his All American Derby trial.

Regular rider Agustin Silva is up with the eighth post position.

Hotstepper, a $63,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, is a warrior who has qualified for four Grade 1 stakes. Owned by R.D. Hubbard, Johnny Cope, Ray Willis and Butch Southway, Hotstepper was a close second in the Grade 1, $874,000 Texas Classic Futurity and third in the All American Futurity.

An earner of $566,421, Hotstepper won his All American Derby trial by one length over All American Futurity winner Fly Baby Fly.

Fly Baby Fly Partnership's Fly Baby Fly, a $180,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, may be returning to her two-year-old form after failing to qualify to the Ruidoso Derby or the Rainbow Derby. The Trey Ellis-trained daughter of One Famous Eagle and champion Higher Fire turned in a :21.534 time in her All American Derby trial and has the final qualifying spot.

Hotstepper, under champion jockey Cody Jensen, qualified third fastest in the final trial race Sunday.

RH Resources' Papaws Paint is a small horse with a big heart. The gelding by Pyc Paint Your Wagon won last fall's $202,000 Hobbs America Futurity and fought for the 440 yards of the Rainbow Derby to grab third place for trainer Todd Fincher, the leading thoroughbred trainer at Ruidoso Downs for wins and money earned.

Bonifacio Perez has the mount on Papaws Paint with the third post position.

Jose Guzman and Rito Sosa's Pyc Fun N Fancy rides a three-race winning streak, including the $364,000 Heritage Place Derby two starts ago. The Jorge Gonzalez-trained colt won his All American Derby trial by three quarters of a length with a :21.533 time.

James A. Flores is up on Pyc Fun N Fancy with the outside post position.
