Double Feature For Sunday At Portland Meadows

By Tom Harris

PORTLAND, OR—OCTOBER 4, 2018—The racing Sunday at Portland Meadows will serve up a double feature for the fans with the running of The $12,000 Director’s Handicap and The Multnomah Falls Handicap.

The Director’s Cap will be the second race of the day for three year olds and upward at 350 yards. For Sweet Jess holds a narrow favored edge from a field of eleven expected to dash down the Portland stretch.

Owned by Sanguino Racing and Trained by Jose Sanguino, the five year old by One Sweet Jess looks to push his career earnings over the $100,000 mark with a score in The Director’s Cap. After racking up a string of four consecutive victories earlier this year, For Sweet Jess will look to rebound from a troubled start in The Challenge at Emerald Downs in his last start as jockey David Martin has the assignment in the Director’s Cap.

The main rival for The Director’s Cap looks to be Favorite Hawk Trained by Hector Magallanes and ridden by Eduardo Sosa for The Allred Ranch (K&R Allred). The five year old son of Favorite Cartel had two game efforts with solid speed numbers at Grant’s Pass in his last two starts.

Sneakin TR was runner-up in last year’s Portland Meadows John Deere Challenge and has been a real gamer throughout 2018. Trained by Scott Raley, Jockey Robert Burney has the call.

The second half of the double feature will be the running of The Multnomah Falls Handicap at five and one-half furlongs for fillies and mares, three year olds and up, which will be run as the eighth race of the day. Copy Begone may carry the favored role after winning four from her last five starts at Emerald Downs for Trainer Neil Knapp.

Jockey Robert Burney will get his first assignment atop the five year old mare by Demon Warlock. Top rival Zanab has won five of ten starts this year spanning from Golden Gate to Emerald Downs. Trainer Neil Knapp will have double duty in the paddock by saddling the top two contenders. Veteran rider Lorenzo Lopez will guide the seven year old by Kitalpha. Last year’s Multnomah Falls

Winner Winninginfashion will try to retain her crown but will be a likely longshot in doing so.

Post time is 12 noon for the Sunday card which offers nine races. Parking and admission are free.
