Saturday Features Lone Star Parks Longest Running Quarter Horse Stakes Race The Grade 1 Refrigerator

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—OCTOBER 13, 2018—Saturday, October 13 features the 22nd running of the Grade 1, $75,000 Refrigerator Stakes for 3-year-olds & up at 440 yards. The Refrigerator Stakes named for AQHA Supreme Racehorse and Racing World Champion, Refrigerator.

Gates open at 5 p.m. First race post time 6:05 p.m. The Refrigerator Stakes is the scheduled 11th race on the 12-race card and will go at 10:25 p.m.

Campaigned by Jim Helzer during his storied career that lasted from 1992 to 1995, Refrigerator by Rare Jet won the Grade 1, Champion of Champions a record three times 1992-94 and was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2000.

Saturday’s field includes Eye N Capo, a 4-year-old gelding by Capo de Capi. He began his career here in 2016 winning his trial to the Dash For Cash Futurity and also won the Grade 2, $373,076 final. He also won the $312,170 Evangeline Downs Futurity that year.

He only raced once in 2017 winning a trial to the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby.

This year he’s won three of five starts including the Grade 2, Sam Houston Classic in May and the Grade 3, Miss Polly Classic Stakes at Delta Downs in July. He is owned by Ruben Montemayor and trained by Josue Ponce. Jessie Levario will ride.

Paragon Farms’ Apollitical Scout has won her last three starts coming into this. The 4-year-old mare by Apollitical Jess won the Grade 2, Junos Request Stakes at Remington Park in June and her most recent win was the Balloon City Stakes at Albuquerque Downs last month. She is trained by Jimmy Padgett and will be ridden by Jose Alvarez.

This meet’s Nevill Stakes winner, Sf Hot Pass will also try his luck in the Refrigerator. Prior to his win in the Nevill he won the Grade 2, TQHA Classic Stakes at Retama Park. Leon Bard trains the 5-year-old gelded son of Ivory James for owner Stormy Fisher. Francisco Calderon has the riding assignment.
