Two Trials On Tap To $210,000 La Primera Del Ano Derby On Saturday Night

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 7, 2019—Favorite Wise Lady, Terrific First Down and You Caught My Eye, a trio of stakes placed fillies in major Los Alamitos races, will headline a pair of trials to the $210,000 La Primera Del Ano Derby on Saturday night.

First post for the eight-race program is 6 pm (PST). A total of 17 fillies will compete in the La Primera trials to be contested at 400 yards.

Starting in 2020, the La Primera will be renamed the Los Alamitos Oaks for sophomore fillies with a projected $400,000 purse. Original nominations for the Los Alamitos Oaks remain open and will close on Friday, March 15.

Parsons Ranch's Favorite Wise Lady will start from post number one in the opening La Primera trial. She's a half-sister to AQHA champion 3-year-old filly A Political Lady, the winner of the La Primera last year. Favorite Wise Lady showed her potential when running second to the outstanding Powerful Favorite in the Governor's Cup Futurity last year.

Favorite Wise Lady struggled in her last start and her trouble comment reads that she was hard to ride. She had been a sweet filly to pilot in her previous five starts, winning three races and running second in her other two journeys. Cody Jensen will ride Favorite Wise Lady from along the rail for trainer Chris O'Dell. Other top names in the opening trial are Governor's Cup Futurity finalist Anas Image, a recent allowance winner here at 330 yards, and Hot Little Kiddy, who also competed in last year's Governor's Cup.

Parsons Family Limited Partnership's Terrific First Down, a half-sister to Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap winner Thermonuclear Energy, is one of the big names competing in the second trial. Sired by FDD Dynasty and out the blue-hen mare Terrific Energy, Terrific First Down finished third to Powerful Favorite in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby on February 9. Trained by Chris O'Dell, Terrific First Down has also posted some runaway victories in her career so the talent is certainly there for her to shine.

Dr. Steve Burns' You Caught My Eye has lived up to her name so far in her career, as the Favorite Cartel filly ran third in the Governor's Cup Futurity and also qualified to the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity. She also easily won her most recent start - an allowance event here at 330 yards. Kelly, Yearsley and Yother's Symbol Of Faith, who competed in the Heritage Place Futurity and Golden State Million Futurity last year, and recent Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes finalist Mayas Signature are among the other top fillies in this heat.

The seventh race on the card will feature the anticipated 550-yard debut of the Champion of Champions finalist Yanque in a $12,000 allowance event. Trained by Matt Fales for owner Martha Wells, Yanque is famous for his incredible late runs and he figures to relish this distance. The Favorite Cartel gelding will enter this race after an out-of-the-money finish in the Grade 1 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship.

He'll face a cast headed by Ed Allred's Well Good, the winner of the Cypress Handicap at 350 yards in his most recent start. The Kiddy Up gelding has finished in the money in 21 of 26 career outings.
