SUNLAND PARK, NM—APRIL 9, 2019—A total of 110 state-bred 2-year-olds have been entered in Saturday’s 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) trials at Sunland Park.
Mr Ordegan and Brianna Bordeaux, the only winners and two of only 10 trial entries with a previous out, headline this year’s New Mexican Spring Futurity trials. A gray son of Tf Featured Effort racing for Raul Lopez and a $6,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Mr Ordegan made his debut with a wire-to-wire, three-quarter length victory in a 300-yard, $20,000 state-bred maiden-special-weight dash at Sunland Park on March 22.
Mr Ordegan is out of Rime Has A Chick, a multiple graded stakes winning 14-year-old daughter of the Rime stallion Major Rime. The colt drew post 2 and will be ridden by Jaime Parga Leos for trainer Cynthia Gonzalez in the third of 11 trials.
Brianna Bordeaux finished in a dead heat for the win with Lv Golden Knight, who has been entered in Friday’s West Texas Futurity (G2) trials, in a 300-yard, $21,000 maiden-special-weight race on March 15. The sorrel Jesse James Jr filly is campaigned by Bella Valenzuela, who purchased Brianna Bordeaux for $17,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale.
Brianna Bordeaux drew post 5 and will be ridden by Jaime Leos for trainer Juan Carlos Gonzalez in the ninth heat.
Other prominent Spring Futurity trial entries include Mischka Cartel, a daughter of Big Daddy Cartel owned and trained by Dick Wellborn. Mischka Cartel is coming off of a second-place finish behind Mr Ortegan in her debut.
A $5,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Mischka Cartel drew post 3 and will be ridden by Marcelo Barraza in the sixth trial.
Last year’s New Mexican Spring Futurity final offered a stakes-record $396,412 purse. The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday’s trials will meet in the $400,000-est. final on May 5, closing day of the 2018-19 Sunland Park meet.
