Jess Doin Time, Veuve Clicquot Among Entries in Canterbury Park Derby Trials

SHAKOPEE, MN - JUNE 21, 2019 - Leading Canterbury trainers and recent stakes winners headline trials for the $78,050 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby on Sunday. The 32nd edition of the 400-yard final will be held on Sunday, July 7.

Gopher State Derby winner Veuve Clicquot returns in the fourth and final trial of the day. The Pyc Paint Your Wagon filly will be ridden by Josh Romero, who rode the filly in the trial, but not the final, for the Gopher State last month. She is trained by Clinton Crawford for Cavanaugh Quarter Horses, LLC.

Veuve Clicquot broke her maiden in her Gopher State trial but is now undefeated in two starts at Canterbury. She earned a career-high speed index of 95 in the Gopher State, her first stakes victory.

The fourth trial may prove to be the most difficult; the recent stakes winner will face 2018 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity winner Bhr Flashing Effort, Alex Picov Futurity winner Spy for the Senate, and Apollitical Mogul, who won his Gopher State trial impressively but failed to qualify for the final in a 38 mph headwind.

Four-time leading Canterbury Park trainer Jason Olmstead will seek his first Canterbury Park Derby win with Jess Doin Time in the first trial. The Apollitical Jess filly, bred and owned by Tom and Jan Pouliot, will be ridden by her usual rider and 2018 leading Canterbury Park jockey, Cristian Esqueda.

Minnesota-bred Jess Doin Time won the open $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity and the $45,000 NCQHRA Futurity at Canterbury in 2018. This spring, she qualified for the $367,800 Heritage Place Derby (G2).

Canterbury Park Hall of Fame Trainer Ed Hardy, who has won the stake a record eight times, trains several entries; watch for Legendari in the first trial. The Corona Cartel filly is out of the graded stakes winning mare All About Ease, making her a full brother to multiple grades stakes winner Chazaq.

Stacy Charette-Hill was won the Derby four times, including last year with Disco Wagon. This year, she brings three entries to the trials, including Hr Back in the Day, who qualified for the $150,000 Iowa Double Gold Futurity last September.

The trials will kick off the Sunday afternoon card at Canterbury; first post is 12:52 pm CT.

The 2019 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse stakes schedule includes 17 stakes races worth over $70,000.

Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, September 14, 2019. The 66-day race meet offers racing on Thursday and Friday evenings at 6:00 pm CT and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 12:45 pm CT. in June and July. Quarter horse racing is held at the beginning of each race card.
