Political Candyhouse Leads Crawford Barn in $156,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity at Canterbury

SHAKOPEE, MN —JULY 5, 2019 —Canterbury Park’s all Quarter Horse card on Sunday features the largest race of the Quarter Horse meet, the $156,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity.

Fastest qualifier Political Candyhouse leads the field for the futurity as the only horse in six trials who was already undefeated in two races; on trial day, he extended his win streak to three. The 2-year-old son of Apollitical Jess is out of the multiple stakes winning mare Candy Cartel.

His time for the 350-yard trial was 17.682.

The Crawford barn will send out half the field for the Northlands final, including Political Candyhouse as well as Sizzling Fajita, an easy winner of the first trial of the day. Sizzling Fajita, by Apollitical Jess and out of the Corona Cartel mare Anita Fajita, qualified to the $396,700 Oklahoma Futurity (G2) at Remington Park in March.

Five Bar Bodee was a slight upset as the winner of the fifth trial for four-time leading Canterbury Park trainer Jason Olmstead. 2018 leading Canterbury Park jockey Cristian Esqueda will be aboard the Five Bar Cartel colt in the final.

The Northlands is the richest race for Quarter Horses in Minnesota and is the second largest purse for any breed at the Shakopee racetrack. Horses that did not qualify for the Northlands final are invited to participate in the $20,000 Mystic Lake Juvenile Stakes, with preference by time in the Northlands trials.

Among the field for the Northlands Juvenile is 3-1 morning line favorite Easy Wagon Tales from the Stacy Charette-Hill barn. Easy Wagon Tales is by Wagon Tales, out of Easy Downhill, by Stoli; she was second in her trial behind fourth fastest qualifier Special Candy Kisses.

Aces Bodaciousbeauty narrowly missed qualifying to the final after running second behind Sizzling Fajita. Bob Johnson trains the Bodacious Dash filly who showed improvement the trial, her second lifetime start.

The $156,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity is Race 9 on Sunday at Canterbury Park. Estimated post time is 4:52 pm CT.

The 70-day race meet offers racing on Thursday and Friday evenings at 6:00 pm CT and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 12:45 pm CT. in June and July. Quarter horse racing is held at the beginning of each race card.
