LOS ALAMITOS, CA—AUGUST 23, 2019—Parsons Ranch's Grade 1 stakes placed filly Geothermal and Martha Wells' multiple winner Tell Cartel are among the seven 2-year-olds that will race in the $25,000 Pat Hyland Handicap at 350 yards on Sunday evening at Los Alamitos.
Geothermal will be making her first start since competing in the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity held here on June 24. The filly by Parsons Rock was a standout on the evening of the Ed Burke trials, cruising to a 3/4 length victory in a time of :17.687.
She returned with another strong effort in the rich final, this time finishing third behind impressive winner Flokie and the two-time futurity placed runner Dreams Divine. In running third in the Ed Burke Million, Geothermal finished ahead of All American Futurity trial winner Determined One and Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity runner-up Mental Error. A half-sister to five stakes winners, including Grade 1 winner Thermonuclear Energy, Geothermal will be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio.
The Matt Fales-trained Tell Cartel was terrific in his first two career starts, winning his debut by 3/4 lengths before returning to score a convincing allowance victory at 330 yards on June 1. The Favorite Cartel colt has finished out of the money in his two most recent outings, running fourth in a trial to the Governor's Cup Futurity and then finishing fifth in the $25,000 California Freshman Stakes. He'll be looking for a return to winning ways with Erasmo Gasca aboard in the Pat Hyland.
Lady Six Sky, scratched out of the John Deere California Juvenile Challenge last week, returns to be a part of this race.
The field will be completed by Calida, Furyofthehuracan, Circle City and A Mere Felix will also race.
