33 To Race In Star-Studded Los Alamitos Super Derby Trials On Saturday At Los Alamitos

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 17, 2019—Grade 1 stakes winners Flash And Roll, Powerful Favorite and Tequila Sangria will be among the 33 sophomores that will race in Saturday's trials to the Grade 1, $1,009,650 Los Alamitos Super Derby.

The 400-yard trials have been carded as races five through eight. The horses with the 10 fastest times in the trials will advance to the Super Derby final to be held on Sunday, November 10. First post for the eight race card is 6 p.m. The winner of next month's Super Derby final will earn a provisional berth to this year's Grade 1, $600,000 Champion of Champions.

Scott Bryant's AQHA champion filly Flash And Roll will be in action in the opening trial of the night (race 5) and will face a tremendous group that includes Heritage Place Derby winner Apollitical Pence and PCQHRA Breeders Derby third place finisher Transcend. Flash And Roll, Apollitical Pence, and Transcend met in last year's Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, which was one of four races that Flash And Roll won during her magical 2018 campaign at Los Alamitos.

Flash And Roll won the Golden State Million Futurity as well last year in route to being named the overall AQHA 2-year-old champion and the champion 2-year-old filly. She enters this trial after finishing out of the money in the All American Derby on September 1. Cody Jensen will ride Flash And Roll for trainer Justin Joiner from post number six.

The second Super Derby trial will see Dr. Steve Burns' Tequila Sangria, who defeated aged mares to win the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap on September 22, facing top 3-year-old geldings Chocolatito, the runner-up in the Breeders Derby on October 4, and Favorite Motion, the third place finisher in the Golden State Derby on August 18. Tequila Sangria has won all three of her starts this season and already has a berth to the Champion of Champions thanks to her Mildred Vessels victory.

Ed Allred's Chocolatito and Richard Frandsen's Favorite Motion have combined to win six of nine starts this year and have particularly shown a winning knack in stakes trials. They've each have two wins in stakes qualifying races.

The third trial is a wide open event led by La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC's Lethal Lil, third in last year's Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and winner of the $100,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes at Ruidoso Downs. Five stakes finalists will also race in this trial.

The final trial is a matchup between two of the best 3-year-olds in the nation. Rosenthal Ranch Inc's Powerful Favorite is a perfect six for six in 2019 - including wins in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby, Grade 3 El Primero Del Año Derby, and Governor's Cup Derby - while Gary Nutt and Turner Farms' Jess Macho Corona arrives at Los Alamitos after running second in the All American Derby. He finished ahead of Powerful Favorite in the Golden State Million Futurity and Ed Burke Million Futurity last year, so he has proven that he is as good as the outstanding Powerful Favorite.

Here are the entries for Saturday’s card at Los Alamitos. The card will also feature a live money handicapping contest with two berths up for grabs to the 2020 National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas. CLICK HERE for tournament rules and format. For more info call 714-820-2690.
