Star-Studded Group In Action In Brad Mckinzie Trials On Sunday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JANUARY 22, 2021—Grade 1 winner Bos Time Machine and Zoomin For Spuds, a pair of past (GI) Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship winners, will be joined by multiple Grade 1 stakes winners Chocolatito, Powerful Favorite, and 17 other aged horses as part of a star-studded night of trials to this year’s $157,750 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship here on Sunday.

Three trials at 400 yards are on tap with the horses with the 10 fastest times advancing to the Valentine’s Day final on Sunday, February 14. This is the first major race open race for older Quarter Horses in the nation.

Top stars will be in limelight in each trial with the opening being headed by the ageless Zoomin For Spuds, a 13-time stakes winner at Los Alamitos and the winner of the Brad McKinzie in 2019. Zoomin For Spuds will be looking to advance to the 17th Grade 1 stakes race of his career.

His rivals in this trial will include Rosenthal Ranch’s 2019 Golden State Million Futurity winner Runforyourlife and Ed Allred’s 2020 Golden State Derby winner Circle City. Connie Nutt and Turner Farms’ Jess Macho Corona, who won the First Down Dash Handicap in his last outing and has been outstanding in many Grade 1 stakes races before will also be in action in this trial.

Rosenthal Ranch’s Powerful Favorite, who won the Los Alamitos Winter Derby in 2019, will begin his quest for a sweep of the Winter Series when he leads the second trial to the Brad McKinzie. The winner of last year’s Go Man Go Handicap (GI) and a stablemate to Runforyourlife, the now 5-year-old Powerful Favorite will come into this race after a strong performance when finishing third in the Champion of Champions.

Dee and Gary Hoovestal’s Bos Time Machine will look to defend his title in this race following his upset victory last year. The son of multiple stakes sire Bodacious Dash will need to improve from his recent performances in order to outduel the likes of Powerful Favorite plus Bobby Simmons’ Mental Error, who finished second in the (GI) Los Alamitos Super Derby in his last stakes final appearance.

Black Fryday, a two-time graded derby winner in 2018, Town Policy winner Doctor Gene and the graded derby placed runner Fire By Night will also be in action in this trial.

The final heat has a lot of star power led by Chocolatito, who won the (GI) Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship and (GI) Vessels Maturity, plus two-time graded derby runner-up Up For Speed and A Ransom Handicap winner Mr Ricks. Up For Speed finished second in in both the (GII) PCQHRA Breeders Derby and Governor's Cup Derby last year.

Recent stakes runner-up Made Over and Red Hawk Cartel will also race in this trial.
