Constituent Among 26 In El Primero Trials On Sunday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 5, 2021—M & G Farms’ Constituent finished the 2020 season with the most wins by a 2-year-old male at Los Alamitos. His five victories were second overall among freshman sprinters here, only behind Grade 1 futurity winner Apollitical Patty’s six wins.

Constituent’s biggest victory of the year came in the Restricted Grade 1 Governor’s Cup Futurity when the son of Seperate Interest outdueled stablemate Squid Word to win the 350-yard futurity by a nose. His sophomore campaign is already off to a flying start after scoring a 1-¼ length victory in his 2021 debut on January 17. In that race, Constituent posted the meet’s fastest 330-yard time of :16.728.

The Steve Burns-bred runner will now headline the trials to the Grade 3 El Primero Del Año Derby at 400 yards which will be held here on Sunday night. Twenty-six sophomores will be action with the runners with the 10 fastest times returning here for the final on Sunday, March 28.

Constituent, who was named the PCQHRA champion 2-year-old colt last year, is trained by Valentin Zamudio and will be ridden by Ruben Lozano from post seven in the third of three trials on Sunday.

"Constituent is my favorite horse for sure," said Johanna Montano Gamez of M & G Farms. "He holds a very special place in my heart. I will never forget the Governor’s Cup Futurity. We never thought we would get to that point. Bringing a win home was amazing. We’re very blessed as a family, M & G Farms in North Carolina. We’re very excited to see where Constituent goes."

Haras Portofino’s Untuckit, who had the fastest qualifying time to the Governor’s Cup in last year’s trials, will look to duplicate his trials success here on Sunday night. The son of Favorite Cartel was sixth in the trials and has since returned to post a good second place in his sophomore debut on February 21.

Michelle and Jeff Cravens’ Favorite Colossus had a monster effort in the Governor’s Cup trials, finished fourth in the final and will now make his sophomore debut this evening after three excellent works this year. Trained by Cesar De Alba, Favorite Colossus will make his first start since running fourth in the Pat Hyland Handicap on August 23.

The El Primero trials will also feature Grade 1 finalists Thats R Best Card, BF Outfoosed and Gentleman Chuck. The latter enters after running in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby, while Thats R Best Card ran fifth in the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and also qualified to the Grade 2 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. Les Sweeting’s BF Outfoosed ran in three futurities last year including the Ed Burke.
