26 Sophomores Headline Trials To Southern California Derby On Sunday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—NOVEMBER 26, 2021—Multiple derby winner Favorite Colossus will be joined by four Los Alamitos Super Derby finalists plus talented runners like Monopolist, J Best Boogie, Tuckk and Just A Dasha Hero in the trials to the Grade 2, $150,600 Southern California Derby on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

The Southern California Derby trials represent the final stakes trials of the season and will the 10 horses that will move on to the 400-yard final to be held on the meet’s closing night on Sunday, December 19. Twenty-six sophomores will race in the trials that will be held in races 8,9 and 10 on Sunday.

Super Derby finalists Fallout, Counting The Ways, SC Divas Cartel Man, and A Dash Of Sign are among the standouts returning to action on Sunday night.

Dunn Ranch’s Fallout finished third in the Super Derby finals and was among the impressive closers in the race. Super Derby winner Flash Bak was the fastest of all in the final yards but Fallout was making a big move from the outside post nine with Jesus Rios Ayala in the irons.

The son of Favorite Cartel will now headline the opening derby trial which will also feature Jeff and Michelle Cravens’ Favorite Colossus and Bujanda, Encinas, Flores and CD Horses Inc’s Counting The Ways, who was fifth in the Super Derby and third in the Governor’s Cup Derby earlier this season.

This field has also lured Apollitical Hero, who arrives after finishing third in the $155,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship. Trained by Cesar De Alba, Favorite Colossus returns to action after big wins in the El Primero Del Año Derby and Governor’s Cup Derby.

The second trial is led by SC Divas Cartel Man, a three-time Grade 1 stakes finalist in his career. His main contenders figure to include Town Policy Handicap runner-up Tuckk, recent allowance winner Garda Da Cash and the talented filly J Best Boogie, who is the 5-2 morning line favorite.

Ed Allred’s Monopolist is the horse to watch in the final trial based on his many terrific efforts this season. A winner of the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity last year, Monopolist has been superb in his trial wins to the Los Alamitos Winter Derby, Governor’s Cup Derby and PCQHRA Breeders Derby. His trial effort to the Governor’s Cup Derby ranks among the best races of the season here, as he posted a tremendous three length victory in route to the fastest qualifying time.

Bland Family, Robyn Gordon and S-Quarter K LLC’s Just A Dasha Hero, the winner of the Town Policy Handicap in his last start, will be looking to build on that momentum when he returns to action in this trial. Stakes winner Teller With Candy and Super Derby finalist A Dash Of Sign are among the top ones to watch in the final heat.
