SUNLAND PARK, NM—JANUARY 10, 2022—Stakes winners Muy Peligrosito and Lethal Avenger are among the 54 3-year-olds entered in Friday’s 400-yard West Texas Derby (G3) trials at Sunland Park.
Muy Peligrosito will be shortening in distance off of his one-length victory in the 440-yard, $100,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship Stakes (G2) at Zia Park on December 5. Eric Valenzuela trains the One Fabulous Eagle gelding for owner Super Champion Inc.
Muy Peligrosito has earned $145,200 from four outs, and his three wins include an upset 1 3/4-length win in the September 6, 440-yard All American Juvenile Stakes at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding drew post 3 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos in the fifth of six trials.
Lethal Avenger will be making his first start since September 19, when the Volcom gelding scored a wire-to-wire victory in the 400-yard, $252,000 La Fiesta Futurity at Albuquerque Downs. A $50,000 purchase at the 2020 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, Lethal Avenger is trained by Fred Danley for owners J & SM Inc., Don Reynolds, and M. Lane Reynolds.
Lethal Avenger drew post 7 and will be ridden by Noe Garcia Jr. in the first heat.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday’s trials will meet in the February 5, $65,000-added West Texas Derby final.
