Minnesota Racing Commission Offers Funding for After-Care Programs

SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 19, 201——The Minnesota Racing Commission (MRC) is seeking 501(c) (3) non-profit racehorse aftercare organizations that have been in operation at least one year to be considered for funding.

The MRC is dedicated to preserving and protecting the quality of life of racehorses once their racing careers have ended. These funds are generated by legislation passed in 2015 to direct fines collected via rulings issued at Canterbury Park and Running Aces to be distributed to support racehorse adoption, retirement and repurposing.

“The Minnesota Racing Commission is eager to help provide racehorse aftercare funds to organizations that will help retired racehorses find a safe and productive post-racing career," said Minnesota Racing Commission executive director Tom DiPasquale. "The Commission's efforts, in combination with the already instituted programs of Canterbury Park, Running Aces and their horsepersons' organizations, will further our goal to provide resources to care for these gifted animals."

Up to $40,000 will be distributed to organizations that care for and repurpose Standardbreds, Quarter Horses and/or Thoroughbred racehorses. The application for racehorse aftercare funds includes a questionnaire, limited financial reporting information, and documentation of 501(c) (3) status.

Organizations must submit applications by August 15, 2018, to be considered for funding.
