IHRC Appoints Longtime Commission Employee to Role of Executive Director

INDIANAPOLIS, IN—AUGUST 20, 2019—After conducting a nation-wide search of qualified candidates, members of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission named Deena Pitman as its newest Executive Director. Pitman replaces Mike Smith, who announced plans for retirement earlier this year.

Pitman joined the IHRC staff in 1993, as its first licensing supervisor, and can be credited with crafting the first ever occupational licensing system in Indiana. In 2000, she was promoted to Assistant Executive Director (Deputy Director) where she has played a pivotal role in managing all aspects of the agency.

"Deena’s longevity with the Commission enables her to provide a unique perspective to this role which no other candidate had, stated IHRC Chairman Phil Borst. Also noting, "The knowledge and experience she brings with her is unmatched, making us confident that she will continue to move Indiana horse racing forward."

The Commission also appointed Thomas (Tom) Linkmeyer to fill the role of Deputy Director. Although new to the agency, he has been a supporter of Indiana’s horse racing industry, participating as an owner, trainer and driver in Indiana and brings an extensive background in business and management to his new role.

Outgoing Director Mike Smith will work closely with the new team during the transition to their positions. "We are thankful for Smith’s dedication and leadership and all he has done to further our industry," remarked Chairman Borst regarding the legacy Smith leaves.
