Wyoming Downs Season Opened July 4 With Spectators

EVANSTON, WY—JULY 5, 2020—Wyoming Downs opened its season Saturday, July 4 before a live crowd of 1,326 spectators. As one of few tracks racing with fans, track officials agreed to meet the Covid 19 safety protocols set by the Uinta County and Wyoming State officials when authorization to race was granted on June 6.

Among the requirements was a limit of 1,500 persons in the stands per day.

Additionally, the track management required all horsemen and spectators to have their temperatures taken with non-contact infrared thermometers prior to entering; all employee wore masks; and fans were encouraged to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

The July 4 opener featured ten races, record purses and a $102,387.00 handle.

“We want to extend our appreciation to the horsemen and fans for working with us to make the season safe,” said Frank Lamb, Wyoming Downs Director of Government Affairs. Owner Eric Nelson added, “We know that live horse racing is important to the city and state and the businesses here in Evanston and so we’re really happy we could launch our season on July 4. The horsemen, the fans our staff and the weather all made for a perfect day.”

Wyoming Downs will race every Saturday and Sunday through August 16.

2020 is the eighth consecutive race season since owner Eric Nelson repurchased Wyoming Downs and began racing in 2013, marking a resurgence of area industries related to racing. Wyoming Downs is the only privately owned racetrack in Wyoming.

Wyoming Downs is located 15 minutes north of Evanston, Wyoming, an approximate 75-minute drive from Salt Lake City, Utah.
