Live Horse Racing at Sunland Park Still Undecided

SUNLAND PARK, NM—DECEMBER 1, 2020—Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino would normally be preparing for its annual mixed Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred race meet, but with COVID-19 virus cases remaining high in New Mexico and with their casino still closed, the start of horse racing or any type of season has still not been announced.

According to the New Mexico Racing Commission website, Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino had a 42-day meet scheduled for Dec. 26 through March 30.

In a recent text to the El Paso Times, Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino officials said: "Per the New Mexico health order, Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino will remain closed. We continue to work with the racing commission as we prepare for the return of live racing."

Horses racing during the 2019- 2020 season ended in mid-March due to virus concerns, costing the track several big races including Kentucky Derby prep race Sunland Derby(G3), the West Texas Futurity(G2), New Mexican Spring Futurity(RG2) and Sunland Park Handicap.

An attempt by the racetrack to bring back simulcasting of horse racing from other tracks last summer lasted only a few days.
