Long Lost Buddy, Klassic Secret Br, Jesses Claim Ta Fame Fastest in Sun Downs Challenge Trials

KENNEWICK, WA—APRIL 26, 2017—Sun Downs hosted trials for the Adequan Derby Challenge, Merial Distaff Challenge and the Dick Monahan Maiden Challenge on Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23.

Adequan Sun Downs Derby Challenge Trials

Long Lost Buddy, under jockey Eddie Aceves, got up at the wire to defeat Genuine Version by a nose in the second of two trials contested Saturday for the $20,000-added Adequan Sun Downs Derby.

The son of leading third crop sire Favorite Cartel picked up his fourth consecutive win while posting the fastest qualifying time of :20.403 seconds, a 90-speed index for the 400 yards.

Mark Hanson conditions last year's Bitterroot Futurity and Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity winner for owners' RTM Stables LLC, Ben McKinney and Richard Gardner.

Bred in California by Steve Burns DVM from the Corona Cartel mare Remember The Cartel, Long Lost Buddy has earned $58,427.

Also, a stakes winner Genuine Version also earned a 90-speed index while getting the second fastest time of :20.409 seconds. Cesar Franco rode the Winners Version gelding for trainer Danny Montes.

Gary Laramie and Janet Oakeson own the Utah-bred out of Audy B Flyin by Genuine Strawfly. Winner of last year's Utah Bred Futurity and a finalist in the Hadley/Giles Futurity and Wester States Breeders' Futurity, Genuine Version has earned $27,654.

The 10 fastest Adequan Derby qualifiers will return to Sun Downs on Saturday, May 6th to vie for the winner's share of the purse as well as a starting spot in the $180,000 Grade 3 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship at Prairie Meadows October 14th.

Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge Trials

On Sunday, Klassic Secret Br, a 5-year-old daughter of multiple stakes sire Fantastic Secret Br picked up where she left off last season by winning her first start this season, a trial on Sunday for the $15,000-added Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge.

Coming off a Handicap victory last December at Portland Meadows the brown mare rallied to a 1 ¼ length win, under jockey Salvador Ibarra, to get the fastest qualifying time of :20.393 seconds, a 90-speed index for the 400 yards.

Owned-and-trained by Juan Sanguino, Klassic Secret Br has compiled a (18) 5-3-2 record and earned nearly $19,000. Benny Rosset bred the mare in California from the Dash For Cash mare Stylish Secret.

BDS Performance Horses' Tic Tac Attack finished second in the same trial to get the second fastest time of :20.570 seconds. Jockey Nakia Ramirez was aboard the Tac It Like a Man 4-year-old from the Separatist mare Harney Girl. Skyler Greene conditions the sakes winning Texas-bred earner of $17,791. Bred by Mark Adair and Mark Adair II, Tic Tack Attack won the Portland Meadows Derby in her last start on November 11th.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Sun Downs on Sunday, May 7th to vie for the winner's share of the purse as well as a starting spot in the $105,000 Grade 1 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship at Prairie Meadows in October.

Dick Monahan Maiden Challenge Trials

Ridden by jockey Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa, Jesses Claim To Fame broke his maiden in the last of three trials Saturday for the Dick Monahan Maiden Challenge at Sun Downs.

The 3-year-old son of Jesse James Jr posted the fastest qualifying time of the three trial races, an :18.299 clocking for 350 yards.

Trainer Hector Magallanes saddled the sorrel gelding for owner Chris Philbrook. Bred in Oregon by Ronald Raley, Jesses Claim To Fame failed to win in a race last season but was a qualifier for the Pot O'Gold, Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge, Far West and Baxter Andress Futurities. Out of the Dash Ta Fame mare One Fast Trick, he has earned nearly $16,000.

Mr First Dash, a gelded son of leading sire Mr Jess Perry, finished a neck off Jesses Claim To Fame to garner the second fastest clocking of :18.330 seconds.

Danny Montes trains the 3-year-old for owner San Gregorio Racing Stable, Inc. Bred in California by Gustavo De La Torre, Mr First Dash has compiled an (11) 0-2-1 record. He is out of the First Down Dash mare Adashin First Dash.
